Just Sittin' Here Waitin' on Wednesday #13

This wonderful meme is based on the one started by Breaking the Spine

The weather is rather blah today,
so I thought that for today's WOW I
would present a fireside worthy read.

This book was turned into one of my favorite movies
and I am so anxious to find out what they didn't put in the movie.

Title:  The Witches of Eastwick
Author:  John Updike
Publisher:  Ballantine Books
Expected Release Date:  March 13th, 2012

Toward the end of the Vietnam era, in a snug little Rhode Island seacoast town, wonderful powers have descended upon Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie, bewitching divorcĂ©es with sudden access to all that is female, fecund, and mysterious. Alexandra, a sculptor, summons thunderstorms; Jane, a cellist, floats on the air; and Sukie, the local gossip columnist, turns milk into cream. Their happy little coven takes on new, malignant life when a dark and moneyed stranger, Darryl Van Horne, refurbishes the long-derelict Lenox mansion and invites them in to play. Thenceforth scandal flits through the darkening, crooked streets of Eastwick—and through the even darker fantasies of the town’s collective psyche.   -Goodreads

I wonder if I can read this book without thinking of Cher and Jack Nicholson?

Will their love encourage him to embrace life as a merman? Can love survive if he wishes to return to human form? Either way, her friends speak true. No matter how much mermagic and dark vodou Ciel and her friends cast, blood-thirsty buccaneers chase them across the Caribbean until Alvaro finally decides.

Warning: This book contains a magical cock-a-too, lecherous scurvy pirate dogs, hoodoo healers, the mark of the evil Black Spot, plenty of dark Haitian vodou, and passionate encounters on tropical beaches.
   -Goodreads

"Tortuga Treasure...Ceil's Legacy" is a veritable treasure trove filled to the brim with magic, danger, merfolk, pirates, and romance.
Readers can't help being swept into the action of the story from its opening pages.  This is not to say that the story in and of itself is rushed in any way.  Marsha A. Moore does a wonderful job of balancing the quieter moments within this read with the more action packed scenes; taking great care to ensure that neither aspect is allowed greater precedence.

The Mer
In a world where tales of mers abound, this one puts quite a different spin on things.  In this water read, Ceil and her mer companions show no hesitation when taking to the land during their quests.  The fact that they actually come out of the water and walk on their fins, gives this story and the mer legend an entirely new dimension.
No longer are the mers water-locked or forced to give up their fins to interact with humans.  The mers ability to come on land while remaining mer allows them a greater control over their responses to  situations that they encounter and makes them more of a force to be reckoned with.

The Magic
This book is filled with so much magic that it would make Harry Potter blush.  Because there is so much that is charmed within this read; we are allowed to see all of the sides of what is magical.  Mers are of course expected to carry with them the enchantments of the sea, and we see that.  What is new and different is that
humans and even animals are allowed to carry and weld charms that are equal to those of the magical merfolk.

The Men
This book has all the men that a mer-girl could want and it seems that Ceil has more than she can handle.
If they are not trying to capture her heart, they are after her body or trying to kill her.  The romantic entanglements, fights, and all other interactions between Ceil, her gal pals, and the men in this story are not to be missed.

The Message
This book is evidence that good things come in small packages.  If you like stories where hearts are true, battles are bloody, love conquers all, and fins are fabulous...this is the read for you!

Don't Sleep on "Awaken"

Title:  Awaken
( The Patronus: Book 1)
Author:  Sarah M. Ross
Format:  Ebook
Length:  175 pages
Publisher:  4 Corners Press
Rating: 4 stars

Lucy Donovan was supposed to have a weekend of fun in the sun, celebrating her upcoming graduation from college. In a split second, everything changed. A drunk driver ended Lucy’s mortal life.

Lucy opens her eyes to a world she never imagined possible and a new destiny: as a Patronus, a guardian of spirits. Adjusting to her new role and abilities while negotiating this confusing realm will test her limits and push her further than she ever dreamed she would go. From wayward spirits who don’t want her help to soul stealing vampires, and even a stuck-up British royal, Lucy must brave them all to save one spirit she can’t bear to lose.

Further complicating her life is an inexplicable yet growing connection she feels to a member of her team, Max, whose mysterious behavior leaves her both confused and intrigued.

Waking up dead was just the beginning of her problems. Lucy’s death is about to become the greatest adventure of her life   -Goodreads

Something New
Sarah M. Ross' "Awaken" has managed to breathe new life into the world of paranormal romance.  Though the elements of the story:  vampires, wares, and angelic guardians are the same, the story, lore and world that is built for readers within the pages of this tale are something new altogether.

Readers will be pleasantly surprised to find that there is a novel sized story within this relatively short read.  Don't let the size if this book fool you.  It is a complex, full bodied story that is chock full of complex characters, action, heartbreak and romance.

Romance....And So Much More
This book stands heads above the rest in that area.  It would have been so easy for  this author to have just allowed Lucy and Max to just fall into bed and succumb to the attraction that is so obvious from the start.  Instead, she takes the high road in this, allowing the relationship between the two to mature as an element of the story instead of becoming its focus.

There are so many other relationships that are allowed to have their place in the spotlight throughout this read.  The friendships that exist between Lucy, James, Cassie, and Max.  The love that shines through for Lucy toward her sister, and the battle within Lucy herself are just a few colors within the emotional rainbow that is this tale.

This is a wonderful read and a great introduction to what promises to be a fascinating series.
Bring on book two...I'm hooked!

You'll Love the Taste of "Sweet Venom"

Title:  Sweet Venom
(Medusa Girls #1)
Author Tera-Lynn Childs
Format: Ebook
Length: 345 pages
Publisher:  Katherine Tegen Publishing
Rating: 4 stars

Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.   -Goodreads

The Pluses
The Plot- Tera Lynn Childs offers a fresh take on the mythos of Medusa and the Gorgons.  Readers will find this decidedly feminine tale of heroism a welcome change in a genre that has been so long dominated by males, with women as hapless victims or relegated to roles of minor renown.

Grace- Though hers is not the first voice that we hear in the story, it is indeed the one that speaks to readers the loudest.  In this first book, it is Grace's footsteps that we follow along the path that leads not only to the realization of her destiny, but that of her sisters as well.  She also serves as the heart of the book.  She is the character that is allowed to be the most flawed and thereby the most relateable.

San Fransisco-  The choice of this city as the setting for this story is a stroke of genius on the part of
Tera Lynn Childs.  The varied cultures and diversity that this city provides assures that though the action is confined to this one space; there is no chance that scenes could become repetitive.

The Monsters- There is no question that there was a great deal of research done when it came to the mythic baddies of this work.  Their actions descriptions and mannerisms were true to myth and the shear number and variety of them was astounding.

The Minuses
Greer and Gretchen- They were basically two sides of the same coin, tough exterior with soft underbelly, eager to please and afraid of being hurt.  So much time was spent on the development of the character of Grace, that these two came off rushed and rather one dimensional.

The Boys- Milo and Nick seem to always be in the wrong place at the right time.  Hopefully that will serve some higher purpose later, but for right now...IT'S ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kyle?????

Timing- The length of time between the beginning of the story and when Gretchen and Grace team up is perfect, it is the rush job occurs toward the end and the way that Greer is almost an after thought that truly detracts from the story as a whole.

Reviewer's Note
It is my hope that the "minuses" that I listed in my review are nothing more than "first bookitis" and as is often the case, will be rectified in the books that follow.
This book is a breath of fresh air in YA and I can't wait for more.

O.K. This was a serious case of COVER LOVE for me.
I mean really.  It's sooo pretty.
Just to be fair though...I did read the synopsis and the story
does seem GREAT...but LOOK at this COVER!

Title:  The Vanishers
Author:  Hiedi Julavits
Publisher:  Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group
Expected Release Date:  March 13th, 2012

From the acclaimed novelist and The Believer editor HEIDI JULAVITS, a wildly imaginative and emotionally intense novel about mothers, daughters, and the psychic damage women can inflict on one another. Is the bond between mother and daughter unbreakable, even by death?     Julia Severn is a student at an elite institute for psychics. Her mentor, the legendary Madame Ackermann, afflicted by jealousy, refuses to pass the torch to her young disciple. Instead, she subjects Julia to the humiliation of reliving her mother's suicide when Julia was an infant. As the two lock horns, and Julia gains power, Madame Ackermann launches a desperate psychic attack that leaves Julia the victim of a crippling ailment.     Julia retreats to a faceless job in Manhattan. But others have noted Julia's emerging gifts, and soon she's recruited to track down an elusive missing person—a controversial artist who might have a connection to her mother. As Julia sifts through ghosts and astral clues, everything she thought she knew of her mother is called into question, and she discovers that her ability to know the minds of others—including her own—goes far deeper than she ever imagined.      As powerful and gripping as all of Julavits's acclaimed novels, The Vanishers is a stunning meditation on grief, female rivalry, and the furious power of a daughter's love

"Trafficked"...A Must Read

 Title:  Trafficked
Author:  Kim Purcell
Format:  Hardback ARC
Length:  384
Publisher: Viking
Rating:  5 stars

Hannah is an ordinary teenager growing up in Moldova until her parents are killed in a terrorist bombing. While she’s still mourning the loss, she gets an offer that sounds too good to be true: a job as a nanny for a Russian family in Los Angeles.
At first, it seems like her luck has finally turned around, but life with the Platonovs quickly spirals into a nightmare. Lillian, the mother, forces Hannah to work sixteen-hour days cleaning, and won’t let her leave the house. Sergey, the father, is full of secrets. And they refuse to pay Hannah.
Stranded in a foreign land with false documents, no money, and nobody who can help her, Hannah has become a modern-day slave. And the more Hannah unravels this family’s terrible secrets, the more her life—and her family back home—are in grave danger. Desperate and lonely, she reaches out to the boy next door. But in the end, the only one who can save Hannah is herself.   -www.kimpurcell.com

My Thoughts
This is a very difficult read, given the seriousness of the subject matter and its societal relevance.   This story is a fictionalized version of tales ripped from the headlines of newspapers nationwide.
Readers hearts will go out to young Hanna, a girl who though continually faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, still finds a way to maintain her integrity, spirit, and sanity.

The appalling behavior of the adults in this book in regard to Hannah and their pitiful attempts to justify and hide their misdeeds is enough to make one's blood boil.  This is clearly an example of what unscrupulous people will do when they think that there will be no consequence.

This book is a must read for anyone with children.  It is time that we as a nation take the blinders off and realize that this is "our" problem.  A problem that will not go away without action from the American people, law enforcement, and government.

Hollow Tours Presents: Stained

 Title:  Stained
Author: Ella James
Format:  Ebook
 Publisher:  Barkley's Books
Rating:  5 stars

After a fire destroys seventeen-year-old Julia’s home and kills her foster parents, she chases the half-demon responsible across the country and back, determined to avenge her family and discover why a host of celestial baddies want her dead. With Julia is enigmatic hottie - Cayne, who has his own score to settle with the half-demon, and who might be just as dangerous as the creature he and Julia hunt.   -Goodreads

Here, yet again, it stands to reason that where there is great story telling there is authoress Ella James.
This tale is nothing like the sweet "be still my heart" love readers were served in "Before You Go".  "Stained" is an action packed, mile a minute thrill read, filled with demons, fights, wings, angst, mystery, suspense...and maybe...just a little...ROMANCE.

What  Are You?
Julia is a girl who loses it all on the night that her house burns down at the hands of a mysterious demon that she sees moments before she is forced to flee her burning home; leaving her dead foster parents and all that she has known behind to start a life as...

Flash forward.   Julia...abandoned pecan factory...death demon...hot guy...a fight...hot guy almost dies...and Julia heals him.
That right, she heals him.  So we the readers are left with the same question for both Julia and the hottie that falls through the roof of the afore mentioned pecan factory, who we later come to know as Cayne.
Who are you?

So Now What?
She saves him from his injuries and he saves her from Sam. Oh yeah, did I not tell you that Mr. Death's name is Sam, and that he is not only hunting Julia, but is also locked in a to-the-death battle with Cayne?
It seems that Cayne and Sam are playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse and Julia is the shiny cat toy with feathers that neither can resist.
This is where the real fun begins.  While on the hunt for Sam readers get to see the sights of Memphis, find out that Cayne is a half demon with missing memories, learn about Julia and her mysterious birthmark, fight more demons and...I would love to tell you but you're just going to have to read it.

Not Your Average Angel
Cayne is not your average angel, and this is not the hot angel + cute girl = show me your wings and I'll love you forever.  This story is a battle from start to finish.  Julia and Cayne are both battling for sanity, truth, love, and their lives.
This is an intelligent read full of characters that are not always perfect, but who are able to think on their feet.  The story plays out before the reader like a flawlessly conducted symphony.  Every scene, player, line, and setting doing its part to make the experience of "Stained" the masterpiece that it is.

"The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight" Is Off The Charts

Title:  The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight
Author:  Jennifer E. Smith
Format:  Hardback ARC
Length:  256 pages
Publisher:  Poppy/Little Brown
Rating:  5 stars

Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?

Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan's life. She's stuck at JFK, late to her father's second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon to be step-mother that Hadley's never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport's cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he's British, and he's in seat 18C. Hadley's in 18A.

Twists of fate and quirks of timing play out in this thoughtful novel about family connections, second chances and first loves. Set over a 24-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver's story will make you believe that true love finds you when you're least expecting it   -Goodreads

Review Disclaimer
Let me begin this review by saying that I don't usually write my reviews in first person, but with this book I felt that there was no other way to truly convey to my audience this book's effect on me other than to do so.
That being said, here we go...

We Are Family
Hadley's irritation, sorrow, confusion, loss, need, anger, and yes, love stood up and screamed at me from the opening lines of this book.  I wanted so much to dive into the pages and slap her father!  The abandonment and betrayal of the father/daughter and familial bonds on which this girl built the foundation of her life had been ripped away and he seemed so ready to just move on!  (Yes...I am screaming in a blog post!)

Jennifer E. Smith will forever have my deepest gratitude for allowing readers of this novel to experience the reorganization of Hadley's family from her POV without excluding or overshadowing the importance or the dynamic of her mother's loss and the way that she dealt with it as well.
Though Hadley's family structure changed, its status as a family did not.  Thank you Miss Smith for allowing Hadley's mother to go through all of emotional turmoil that a separation of that caliber would cause, and still remain Hadley's mother.
Although I feel that in the grand scheme of things, Hadley's father got away with murder.  I cannot fail to acknowledge that he did take responsibility for his role in things.  I have to albeit begrudgingly, give him a bit of a pat on the back for attempting to include his daughter in his new life.

See YA authors...You can have strong parental interaction and respect between parent and child and the book won't self destruct.

Imagine Meeting You Here
The way that Hadley and Oliver met was so natural and unscripted that I just had to stand up and cheer.  Proof that it is often the most ordinary occurrences which have the most life altering effects.   I loved the two of them together from the beginning, and literally had to speed read my way through the areas in this story that didn't concern them; to get back to their parts.
Oliver was just Oliver...sweet, intelligent, wounded, loveable, funny, Oliver.  It was the fact that he was 'just Oliver,' that made him so loveable.
We regular girls the world over get to experience a little wish fulfillment in Oliver and Hadley.  Through them we get to see what happens when an ordinary girl with issues meets an ordinary guy with issues and they become extraordinary together in spite of said issues.

 And Finally
"The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight" is a beautiful microcosm in which love lost, love found, and love metamorphosed is presented to the reader with an unsurpassed beauty and heart-tugging emotional honesty that any reader would love.

Hollow Tours Presents: Before You Go

 Title:  Before You Go
Author:  Ella James
Format:  Kindle
Rating:  5 Stars

Margo Ford just became an heiress. Not the Paris Hilton kind. Her billions came after her father died and her insanely wealthy, insanely absent mother officially claimed her. Unfortunately, some terrorists noticed, and they hatched a plot to kidnap her. After a news report goes awry, reporting that Margo *has* been kidnapped, and her mother offers the humiliating sum of $500,000 for her return, Margo doesn't want anything to do with her *#$!@ of an egg donor. Then she is sentenced to a summer of "protection" on her mother's private island. Not the Oprah Winfrey kind. This one has an astronomical observatory filled with scientists, including Logan Greer, a super hot, super infuriating planet-hunter. Hiding out from kidnappers has never been so boring... until suddenly it isn't anymore.

My Thoughts
Ella James does a wonderful job of bringing her readers into the sheltered, privileged, but loveless world of Margo Ford.  Readers are immediately struck by her loss, sorrow, insecurity, and her need for an emotional port in the turbulent storm that is her life.
When she meets Logan, the handsome young pilot that is hired to take her to her "mother's" island; she is immediately swept away on a tide of desire that sets her adrift in very unfamiliar waters.

This book is a wonderful example of all of the things that a novella should be.  It is well-written and the characters are well defined, so that the reader doesn't have to spend time trying to figure out who is doing what and why.   There is a definite focus on Logan and Margo's relationship without sacrificing the importance of other players  to the drama as a whole, and individuals within the work are written in such a way that they are instantly relateable  to readers.

This is a joy to read and will bring a smile to the heart of anyone who still believes in true love, chemistry, white knights, princesses, and following one's own star.

Hollow Tours Presents: Creature Kid

Title:  Creature Kid
(The Teenage Chronicles:  Vol. 1)
Author:  Rashad Freeman
Format:  Kindle
Length:  186 pages
Rating:  5 stars

Why do the movies always portray mutants as having some kind of glorious plight? If a kid got bit by a radioactive spider he’d probably puke webs right before he died. Men that can walk through bullets and fly don’t dress in tights and pretend to be newspaper reporters. And there are no special flashlights to shine in the air to signal you when there’s trouble. You want to be a superhero and fight crime? Prospects are unlikely at best. Chances are you’d just get sued by the criminals you arrested and put in prison for delivering your own vigilante justice.
The truth of the matter is living as a mutant is risky business. Uncontrollable outbreaks, delusions of grandeur and don’t forget the horde of scientists eager to pick you apart to figure out what makes you tick. Did you really expect a special school to crop up just to take care of all the misfortunate adolescents? Or you could create your own little team by adding Fantastic, Super, or Glorious to the front of a number. No, you wouldn’t be so lucky. And neither was Anthony Dimair, as a matter of fact he was the exact opposite. Now he must survive long enough to find the meaning of his Uncle’s cryptic message while avoiding capture, fighting the elements, and trying to not end up as dinner.    -Amazon

Just A Boy?
Anthony Dimar is just trying to survive his freshman year of high school in one fairly intact physical and mental piece.  He seems to be doing a good job of it too, until...
HIS WINGS COME IN!

Yes, you heard right!
No, this was not the blessed event that he had been waiting for to make his life complete.
NO...IT IS NOT TIME FOR THE SUPERMAN MUSIC AND TIGHTS!
Sorry this is not that kind of story.

In this story, after the wings which by the way, are of the "furry bat variety" and not the "angelic sexy angel type" that seem to be all the rage right now.  Everything that can come out of the woodwork to attack Anthony and his motley crew of friends does just that.

A Read Anyone Could Love
This book is one to give to the person in your life who "doesn't read".  With instantly likeable characters, a fast-paced but well constructed plot and story line, and well written scenes this book is a really great read.
Readers will be surprised to find that though this book is quite fun and written from the viewpoint of a boy in his early teens, it is a very intelligent story.
Thank you Mr. Freeman for an original tale of friendship, adventure, bravery and fun in 186 pages!
This was a joy to read and I can't wait for the next installment.
