Adult Contemporary Review: Sometimes "The Understory" is the Best Story of All

Title:  The Understory
Author:  Elizabeth Leiknes
Format:  E-galley
Length:  254 pages
Publisher:  Bancroft Press

She never cries, but she fakes it beautifully.

And at night, she escapes from the failure of her own life by breaking into the homes of others, and feeling, for a short while, like a different, better person.

But one night, as an uninvited guest in someone's empty room, she discovers a story sadder than her own: a boy named Cooper Payne, whose dream of visiting the Amazon rainforest and discovering the moonflower from his favorite book, Once Upon a Moonflower, died alongside his father.

For reasons even she doesn't entirely understand, Story decides that she will help Cooper and his mother. She will make his dream come true.

When the decision is made, the lives of other broken people start to come together: Hans Turner, the door-making magician who can't shut the door on his past; Martin Baxter, the author of Cooper's beloved book, who wrote it with the daughter he misses every day; and Claire Payne, Cooper's mother, struggling to keep her son sheltered from the anger that threatens to consume her.

The Understory is a magical, moving, funny, and poignant story of failure and success; of falling apart and rebuilding; and of coincidences that never really are. Part comedy, part drama, and part fairy tale, Elizabeth Leiknes's second novel is a wonder you won't soon forget.  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
This is a story about the interconnectedness of the human condition and how words can be the catalysts that cause some of the greatest elevations of the human soul.
Story Easton is a woman so eager to shed the tattered rags of her life that she slips stealthily into the lives of others in the dead of night by way of unlocked windows, untended doors, and empty rooms.
The stories that she reads on the faces, in the voices, and in the houses of all the lives that she enters serve as a call to action for Story.
Her key...
Once Upon a Moonflower
The story of the magic of the Amazon rainforest and a girl who was once the magic of her father's life.

Just as the shrubs and plants that grow beneath the canopy of a forest are its understory; the pain, loss , and regret shared by Cooper, Claire, Martin, Hans, and Story serve as the floor from which the seeds of love, forgiveness, understanding, determination and hope sprout and flourish.

The true magic of this story lies in the fact that the one tangible thing that connects all of these lives is just that...a story.  The one thing that offers hope, release, and redemption is the written word.
This book stands as its own testament to the alchemical power of literature to transform thought into action and action into transformation of the force that is life.

Is "Arise" Really Up tp the Challenge?

Title Arise
(Hereafter #2)
Author:  Tara Hudson
Format:  E-galley
Length:  404 pages
Publisher:  Harper Teen
Amelia—still caught between life and death—must fight for every moment of her relationship with the human boy Joshua. They can hardly even kiss without Amelia accidentally dematerializing. Looking for answers, they go to visit some of Joshua’s Seer relatives in New Orleans. But even in a city so famously steeped in the supernatural, Amelia ends up with more questions than answers…and becomes increasingly convinced that she and Joshua can never have a future together.Wandering through the French Quarter, Amelia meets other in-between ghosts, and begins to seriously consider joining them. And then she meets Gabrielle. Somehow, against impossible odds, Gaby has found a way to live a sort of half-life...a half-life for which Amelia would pay any price. Torn between two worlds, Amelia must choose carefully, before the evil spirits of the netherworld choose for her.  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
Arise is the much anticipated second book of the Herefter series.  This is the book that is supposed to really allow the reader to get to know more about Josh and his family; while at the same time exploring the deepening relationship between Amelia and the afore mentioned Josh.
Did this happen?
Weeeeeellllll...
Yes and no.

The Yes
Readers do get to find out more about Josh's family when the story takes them to New Orleans and things start to get rather creepy and a whole lot convoluted.
We also get to see Josh and Amelia's relationship progress to the point that if this were any genre other than YA or if she was not a ghost, there would be sex.
Not to worry though...
All inappropriate behavior is cleverly avoided when Amelia conveniently dematerializes when things get too hot and heavy.
Cute...but frustrating after about the third or fourth time.

The No
It is in fact the yes that is Josh and Amelia's relationship that leads us to our first and biggest no.  Though the story starts out with Josh and Amelia being as thick as thieves, once they arrive in New Orleans and meet up with The Seers, Alex, and Gaby things just go from bad to worse.
Josh and Amelia want to be together and they will stop at nothing to do this.
So...
We meet Gaby.
Gaby is a ghost of a whole different sort and she's got skills.
She can make solidify enough to appear human, eat, and even change clothes.
She is willing to share these gifts with Amelia.
All this sounds great to Josh and Amelia, but as with everything in the afterlife; in order to get something, something must be given.
For Amelia, that something is her ability to touch the living...more importantly...to touch Josh.
This price it seems is one that is too high for our girl and one that she doesn't realize has been exacted until it is too late to unpay.
It is after Amelia's transformation that the paranormal aspect of the story really kicks into high gear, leaving Josh and Amelia's relationship in the dust.
The second no sneaks its way in due to the fact that though readers are introduced to members of Josh's family who have "spirit handling gifts", we never get to really see them use them in any meaningful way.

Alex
Alex is in this book what Eli was in the first   He wants the power that the demons if the netherworld will give him if he can give them what they want most. Amelia.
He is so determined to get what he wants that he is willing to destroy everyone in his path to do so.

Last Words
This is a well written story, but it relies too much on the lore of New Orleans to give credibility to the paranormal aspects of the story that need no such help.  In truth, it is the change of scene from Oklahoma to Louisiana  that throws the book off of the wonderful path that readers skipped down in Hereafter.
There were also several allusions made to the "dark masters" and demons that are after Amelia, but they remain references for the most part.
Gaby is the saving grace of this story for the most part and I can't wait to see what role she plays in the next book.

Blog Tour: Can You Face "The Reckoning"?

Title:  The Reckoning
(The Taker #2)
Author:  Alma Katsu
Format:  Print ARC
Length:  343 pages
Publisher:  Gallery Books
I turned to Luke and reached for him. My blood felt as though it had seized up in my veins.

“Lanny, what is it?” Luke asked.

I clutched his lapel desperately.

“It’s Adair. He’s free.”

FOR 200 YEARS SHE’S BEEN HIDING
He gave her immortality.
She tried to destroy him.
Now he is searching for her.
They must not meet.

Or there will be a RECKONING...
-Goodreads

My Thoughts
It is with great pleasure that WTF Are You Reading? takes the time to revisit the sweeping saga that began with Alma Katsu's The Taker, and is now continued in The Reckoning.
In this, the second offering of the series, we find that much has changed in the life of Lanore.  She and Luke are together, and in London to view a "mystery exhibit" of artifacts that are being shown at the Albert and Victoria museum.  These artifacts, as it turns out, are actually pieces from Lanore's estate.
It is while standing in the middle of her past; that Lanore receives the first inkling of a happening that will surely mean the end of her future.
ADAIR IS FREE!
Adair...her maker...her lover...her captor...and now...HER KILLER??
Adair has been trapped in the walls of his Boston mansion for some 200 years by the woman that he loved, and now that he has been freed by the property's demolition, he wants revenge.
This book is more of Alma Katsu at her story-weaving best. What we have in this author is no ordinary storyteller.  She is indeed a weaver of tales, using the tools of imagary, word-smithing, and scene building to surround each member of her audience in a tailor made literary experience of the finest quality imaginable.
In this book, just as she did with The Taker, Alma Katsu  takes readers on an epic journey of love, betrayal, loss, pain, ecstasy, and alchemy that spans the past and present, as well as the globe.
It is not often that one finds a story in which the past and the present are not only able to coexist, but to blend seamlessly, creating a continuous timeline for not one, but all of the essential characters therein.
The emotional complexity with which this tale's characters are invested means that there are no true "white knights" or "dark horses".  There is more of a play on "shades of grey" that always serves to keep one guessing and to keep loyalties and allegiances changing with the reader as they do with the players as the drama found within the pages progresses.

This book is the perfect mid-point in a trilogy, the book that allows the reader to delve into the things that make the characters that they were introduced to in the first novel tick.  This is by no means a "stand alone" read.  So much of who these people are and how they came to be is found in The Taker, that you will not fully understand their progression, or in some cases, digression in The Reckoning, without having first read its predecessor.
 The Lady Behind the Lit
Alma Katsu is a writer living in the Washington, DC area with her husband, musician Bruce Katsu. She was born in Fairbanks, Alaska but spent most of her childhood in Massachusetts, in the middle of where colonial history was made. She started writing as a stringer for local newspapers while still in high school and continued as a freelance writer through her college years at Brandeis University, where she studied writing with novelist John Irving and children's book author Margaret Rey. She moved to Washington, DC to take a job with the federal government and stopped writing fiction for about twelve years to concentrate on her career. She returned to writing fiction at age forty and was accepted into the writing program at Johns Hopkins. The Taker was one of two novels she worked on while at Hopkins. It took about ten years to get The Taker in its present form. The Taker was published in 2011 by Gallery Books/Simon and Schuster in the US, in World English by Century/Random House UK, and translation rights sold to six countries. When not working on her latest book, Alma sometimes hangs out with the Northern Virginia chapter of the Writer's Center. She is a member of International Thriller Writers because they were quite nice to her when she was going through a thriller-writing phase, and is an alumnus of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers.

Now he’s seeing Anna everywhere: sometimes when he’s asleep and sometimes in waking nightmares. But something is very wrong... these aren’t just daydreams. Anna seems tortured, torn apart in new and ever more gruesome ways every time she appears.

Feel the Fire of "Dark Frost"

 Title:  Dark Frost
(Mythos Academy #3)
Author:  Jennifer Estep
Format:  E-galley
Length:  336 pages
Publisher:  Kensington

I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again.

Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me?

It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
Though Dark Frost is the third book of the Mythos Academy series, it has just as much fire as the books that came before.  Gwen Frost is doing the best she can to learn all the things that she needs to know to serve as champion to the goddess Nike.  Add to that the fact that she seems to be on the most wanted list of evil servants of imprisoned God of Chaos, Loki, and the key to the whereabouts of a magical blade that is meant to serve as the key to Loki's release.

This is a wonderfully written story brimming with myth and magic.  Unlike so many authors who choose to include myth and legend in their tales; Jennifer Estep combines myths from several cultures, presenting them to readers within her story while still managing to maintain their individual integrity within the overall pantheon.

Gwen is a very likeable character who handles the challenges that face her in this read with a grace and maturity that is far beyond her years.  She pulls at the heart-strings with her ability to be brave out of necessity while still unsure that what shes doing is right.
The battles that Gwen fights with the bad guys of this story may be fierce, but they can't hold a candle to the ones that she is fighting within herself.

Reapers, Loki, a mystery, love, and adventure await those brave enough to weather Dark Frost.

Adult Romance Review: You Will Never Forget "The Sting of the Scorpio"

Title:  The Sting of the Scorpio
Author:  Monique Domovitch
Format:  E-book
Length:  192 pages
Publisher:  Lanson Publishing

In Scorpio Rising, Monique Domovitch presented a compelling tale filled with colorful characters and the manipulation of power, ambition, and greed. Now she gives us its spellbinding sequel, The Sting of the Scorpio, where Alexander Ivanov returns to New York with his new bride, Brigitte.

The real estate industry is ripe with opportunity. Blessed with irresistible charm, ambition, and the single-minded obsession to succeed, Alex plots and manipulates his way to almost mystical success. Everything he touches turns to gold, but it’s never enough. When a hostile takeover bid leaves him struggling to save his beloved company, he suspects those closest to him of plotting his downfall.

Brigitte, the beautiful redhead who abandoned her country and her career to become his wife, feels alone. In return, Alex has betrayed her time and again, each indiscretion cutting deeper into her soul.

Brigitte’s son, David yearns to be an artist, but Alex’s plans leave no room for such frivolous goals. He grooms a reluctant David to become the heir apparent until a devastating tragedy attracts the attention of another young man.

The Sting of the Scorpio is a rich tale of a man at the mercy of his own greed and a woman bound by her need for love. -Goodreads

My Thoughts
In this, the second installment of the Scorpio Rising series, readers get to catch up with the newly married Alexander and Brigitte Ivanov as they trade the charm and sophistication of Paris for the non-stop hustle of New York.
One would think that Mr. Ivanov would have the world by the tale as the new husband to a beautiful and talented artist, and father to an adoring son.  In the case of any other man, one would be right; for Alex however, that assumption could not be further from the truth.
Alex, it seems is a man of passions, and having sated his passion of the heart with his marriage to Brigitte; he is off to woo his first love...power.

In The Sting of the Scorpio readers will bear witness to what can happen when the evils of greed and ambition are allowed to go unchecked and "success at any cost" becomes the rule of the day.

While it is true that the tone and direction of this book is distinctly different and more raw than that of the first, the book's author is able to weave a story that is in many ways even more compelling than that of her previous work.
Monique Domovitch's saga of power, love, sex, passion, and ambition is an  entertaining and thought provoking tale that leaves one to question...
Is too much ever really enough?

Adult Romance Review: You Are Sure to Fall For Scorpio Rising

 Title:  Scorpio Rising
Author:  Monique Domovitch
Format:  E-book
Length:  358 pages
Publisher:  Lansen Publishing

Set in New York and Paris amid the glamorous and competitive worlds of art and real estate, Scorpio Rising takes the reader from the late 1940s to the 1960s through the tumultuous lives of its heroes.

There is Alex Ivanov, the son of a Russian immigrant and part-time prostitute. He yearns to escape his sordid life and achieve fame and fortune. His dreams of becoming a world-class builder are met with countless obstacles, yet he perseveres in the hope of someday receiving the recognition he craves.

Half a world away, Brigitte Dartois is an abused teenager who runs into the arms of a benefactor with an agenda all his own. When she finds out that her boss has an ulterior motive, she flees again, determined to earn her living through her art. This career brings her fame, but also the unwanted attention of her early abuser.

Monique Domovitch’s debut novel, Scorpio Rising, is a compelling tale filled with finely etched characters and a superb understanding of the power of ambition. Scorpio Rising promises to resonate with all who once had a dream.  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
Monique Domovitch has clearly shown herself to be a shining star within the genre of Romance. This captivating read provides it's audience a front row seat from which to witness the drama that seems to permeate the lives of both Alex Ivanov and Brigitte Dartois.
Though each tale presents a separate story told from both a different vantage point as well as from opposite sides of the globe; the haunting shades of despair and desperation coupled with fiery hues of passion, hope, and determination paint a picture of lives that the mind's eye must see to believe.
The seemingly endless reserves of emotionality found in this work, coupled with the complexity of an ever evolving plot, is reminiscent of  masterpieces penned by long-standing greats such as Danielle Steele and Sidney Sheldon.
It is hard to believe that this is Ms. Domovitch's first novel.  I am happy to confidently predict that with talent such as this, it is far from her last.

Adult Contemporary Review: Wife 22 Is a #1 Read

 Title:  Wife 22
Author:  Melanie Gideon
Format:  E-Galley
Length:  400 pages
Publisher:  Ballantine Books

For fans of Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary and Allison Pearson’s I Don’t Know How She Does It comes an irresistible novel of a woman losing herself . . . and finding herself again . . . in the middle of her life.

Maybe it was those extra five pounds I’d gained. Maybe it was because I was about to turn the same age my mother was when I lost her. Maybe it was because after almost twenty years of marriage my husband and I seemed to be running out of things to say to each other.

But when the anonymous online study called “Marriage in the 21st Century” showed up in my inbox, I had no idea how profoundly it would change my life. It wasn’t long before I was assigned both a pseudonym (Wife 22) and a caseworker (Researcher 101).

And, just like that, I found myself answering questions.

7. Sometimes I tell him he’s snoring when he’s not snoring so he’ll sleep in the guest room and I can have the bed all to myself.
61. Chet Baker on the tape player. He was cutting peppers for the salad. I looked at those hands and thought, I am going to have this man’s children.
67. To not want what you don’t have. What you can’t have. What you shouldn’t have.
32. That if we weren’t careful, it was possible to forget one another.

Before the study, my life was an endless blur of school lunches and doctor’s appointments, family dinners, budgets, and trying to discern the fastest-moving line at the grocery store. I was Alice Buckle: spouse of William and mother to Zoe and Peter, drama teacher and Facebook chatter, downloader of memories and Googler of solutions.

But these days, I’m also Wife 22. And somehow, my anonymous correspondence with Researcher 101 has taken an unexpectedly personal turn. Soon, I’ll have to make a decision—one that will affect my family, my marriage, my whole life. But at the moment, I’m too busy answering questions.

As it turns out, confession can be a very powerful aphrodisiac.  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
Alice Buckle is every woman who has ever chosen to trip through the tulips down the "golden love and marriage path" while high on pheromones and viewing the world through love's rose-colored lenses of "happily ever after"; only to wake up years later and find that prince charming has become a selective mute, the kids may or may not have "issues" that she  may or may not have to deal with, and the only two constants in her life are her dog's "peeing problem" and her almost obsessive need to check her Facebook account.
Alice is so likeable on so many levels.  She tries so hard to be a good mother, friend, teacher, wife, and dog-owner.  That, it seems is her problem.  She is so busy "giving" that she doesn't "take" anything for herself.  It's almost as if she has forgotten that it is possible for her to use her voice for anything other than saying "yes" to the needs and wants of those that she loves.
So when she becomes Wife 22 and finally starts getting the attention that she deserves from the elusive Researcher 101, through her participation in a blind study of marriage conducted via email;  readers get to discover the real "Alice", just as she discovers herself.  Not to be outdone, the family and friends of our beloved Wife 22 do their best to round out the story with their crises, neurosis, miscommunications, triumphs and failures.
This is a wonderful journey through the life and times of love, marriage and the mid-life crises in the age of Facebook and the ending is not to be missed.
If you are a fan of "You've Got Mail" This is the book for you.
Who says you can't find love online????

Who created that slide of silk across your skin as you reached for your cinematic lover? Who recorded the crushing weight of the grizzly as you fought for your life in the fictional wilderness? It is Lone Pine Pictures’ Alyse Kate Bryant who wraps your body in the story only your mind was privy to before.

A brilliant sensory immersion artist and a wild daredevil, Alyse will do almost anything for the perfect sensory file, but the violent death of her father has her teetering on the very edge of reckless sanity.

For just one night, Alyse seeks refuge in the arms of a beautiful stranger.

And her recklessness finally has consequences.

Now Alyse finds herself trapped in the flooded ruins of Venice, a quarantine camp for the carriers of Sleepers’ Syndrome. But it can never be that simple. Because the Sleepers’ Syndrome carriers who populate the camp are no longer as human as they seem.

The city of legend is bringing its legends back to life.

They come now, Alyse.

-Goodreads
My Review
Though it starts slowly, Faces In the Water turns out to be a very captivating read.  The magic of this read lies in the author's ability to build characters who are more than who they seem at first glance.  The reader is never really sure however, just how many layers a character has or just when the next one is going to make itself known.
This multi-layered treasure trove is never more beautifully displayed then when seen in the form of the story's main character Alyse.
This is a girl who is allowed to be smart, strong, capable, and decisive without losing her vulnerability.
Yes folks...there is the shocker!
Alyse is allowed to feel.
That is in fact her job.
She is the person that is out there in the thick of life, risking it all for the delight, shock, and awe of armchair daredevils everywhere.
Until...
She finds herself an unwitting party to a mission that will take her to the timeless beauty that is Venice,
only to be trapped in horrors brought about by a combination of disease, manipulation, and betrayal.
It is here that the story truly finds its wings and takes you on a mile a minute thrill ride filled with suspense, adventure, and mind-bending plot twists.

FEAR NOT FOR ALYSE.
SHE WILL FIND HER WAY THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS.
EVEN IF SHE HAS TO BREAK IT!
