SOMETIMES ALL YOU NEED IN LIFE IS A FABULOUS PAIR OF SHOES—AND A LITTLE HELP FROM A MERMAID.  Formerly an up-and-coming magazine editor, Jenny Lipkin is now your average, stretched-too-thin Brooklyn mom, tackling the challenges of raising two children in a cramped Park Slope walk-up. All she really wants is to survive the sweltering New York summer with a shred of sanity intact. But when her husband, Harry, vanishes one evening, Jenny reaches her breaking point. And in a moment of despair, a split-second decision changes her life forever.

Pulled from the brink by an unexpected ally, Jenny is forced to rethink her ideas about success, motherhood, romance, and relationships. But confronting her inner demons is no easy task. . .-Goodreads

My Thoughts
The Mermaid Of Brooklyn is a book you love because it is a book in which you find yourself.  No...I don't mean your idealized, airbrushed, lipoed, "I just won the lottery, so everyone can suck it" self.
This is for sleep deprived, soft around the middle, "This is not what the brochure promised" self.  Who finds that life has set her adrift in waters far deeper than the ones in which she frolicked a la her parents' pool.
This book sheds an honest and glaring light on all the dirty little secrets about marriage and motherhood that Hallmark chooses to creatively omit.
You know, the ones like...
1.  Prince Charming has a gambling addiction.
2.  One of your "bundles of joy" could double for a police siren and has no off switch.
3.  Prince Charming left you, Thing 1, and Thing 2, high and dry without a word.

While it is true that life with our anti-heroine is less than stellar pre-swan dive.  She more than makes up for that afterward.
It is great to see what happens when a little mer magic enters her life.
This is where the book starts to get a little fun.
There's even a little "cute dad romance" courtesy of a new guy in Jenny's life.
There is also quite the surprise ending for our "little mermaid" concerning her wayward prince.

This is a book for the reader who has always wanted to be a "fly in the wall" during the less than shining moments of someone's existence.  That reader who likes a little drama in her read.  That reader who is not afraid to take the long way 'round to her "happily ever after".
