Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, still walks the modern world. No longer thronged by worshipers, Aphrodite heals the bodies and souls of the men she touches, one man, one night, at a time. But not everyone thinks of her as a long-dead myth. Someone is stalking her. The men who have hunted her kind as witches for centuries have passed their hatred on to their sons. As she flees her enemies and tries to warn her sisters of the danger facing them once again, Aphrodite is followed by one of the members of the Brotherhood, a man who has been given the task of killing her, and any of her sisters who cross his path. But it does not take her long to discover that Steven Wharton is not a murderer, and his soul is one she has known before. In this paranormal romance, a goddess’s past is brought to life, from the Greek city of Corinth to the shores of the island of Cyprus, at the court of Versailles to the burning city of Persepolis. But it is not until she meets Steve that Aphrodite falls in love for the first time. As she faces an ancient enemy, Aphrodite discovers that the love she feels, not the love she gives, is the root of her soul. And that love might even be the path to her freedom...
My Thoughts
Aphrodite's Choice is an astoundingly expansive first novel. Telling the story of the fabled goddess Aphrodite, who has lived among mortals for some 900 years. In various guises, names, and worldwide locales. Doing what she can to help both woman and men. But men especially. By healing their physical and psychological ills through nights of sensual pleasure.
Nights which, though they leave these men happy, sated, and whole. Paradoxically also manage to leave them with no memory of Aphrodite. A twist which though poetic, leaves our Goddess Of Love essentially loveless.
Making matters worse for the ephemeral Aphrodite is the fact that she is being hunted.
Believed to be a witch, Aphrodite has been targeted by The Brotherhood Of Light. An age old organization determined to stamp out the occult and its practitioners by any means necessary. Leading the charge. Newest initiate, and very eager beaver Steve.
But Steve has no idea that the prize he seeks to capture may just capture him in return.
This is an absolutely stunning read. Instantaneously captivating from opening scene to closing sentence. Author Christy English is very careful to give leading lady, Aphrodite modern sensibilities, without losing the lessons, grandeur, and majesty of her past.
The fact that her very raison d'etre or (reason to be) flies in the face of her essence, makes her a very sympathetic and championable heroine.
She is also a very fluid lead. Always ready to take center stage. But strong enough to stand in the wings when the need arises.
The paranormal element of Aphrodite/Addy's godhood, is seamlessly blended with historically relevant places and times in a way that makes the entire experience very real to the reader.
And...
The romantic components of the read are heightened considerably by the threat of danger posed by Steve and his mission.
This is not a book or series to be missed or overlooked. The characters possess a bold and brilliant fire that readers well in bringing its whirlwind story to life.
