Review For Served Hot
(Portland Heat #1)

From its famous coffee to the mouthwatering fare at its cafés, restaurants, and bakeries, Portland, Oregon, has a lot to whet the appetite, including the hard-working men who serve it all up—hot, fresh, and ready to go—with no reservations…

Vic Degrassi is a baker on the rise, and it’s all thanks to his rare ability to make—and keep—his New Year’s resolutions. Whether it’s losing weight, giving up smoking, or graduating from culinary school, Vic goes after what he wants—and gets it. This year? He wants Robin Dawson, the sweet-hearted hottie who volunteers with him at the local homeless shelter.

When he learns that Robin is suddenly single after being unceremoniously dumped, Vic is more than happy to offer a shoulder to cry on—or at least a fresh-baked pastry to bite into. But it’s been a long time since Vic’s gone on a date, and he’s nervous about risking his friendship with Robin. So when their flirtation turns into a steamy night together, Vic and Robin have to figure out if they’re friends with benefits or lovers in the making, and if Robin is ready for something more than just a rebound. There’s only one way to find out: turn up the heat…  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
Vic Degrassi would love nothing more than to make Robin Dawson his. But Vic is a man haunted by the cruel specter of his past. Just a year into his new, post gastric surgery body. Vic has not come to terms with the 'new him. Making matters worse for Vic are the recent deaths of his father, uncle, and cousin from heart disease.

The two things that Vic is sure about however, are his skill as a patissier and his feelings for Robin Dawson.

For his part...
Robin too, is a man haunted by his past. A man trying not to let anyone get too close. Trying to outrun the shame of a past fueled by his addiction to alcohol and drugs. A past filled with deeds and consequences that he would do anything to forget.
A past that he will come face to face with during his service at the homeless shelter where both men volunteer.

Vic Degrassi and Robin Dawson are the perfect blend of sweet brokenness. Each in need of what the other is more than willing to give. Each afraid to let the other see just how far the hurt, insecurities, and self doubt that plagues them both really goes.

While Fresh Baked is for the most part a light and steamy male/male romance. Authoress, Annabeth Albert,

Romance Is The Key To The Secrets Of "Forbidden"

Title:  Forbidden
(Her British Stepbrother #1)
Author:  Lauren Smith
Length:  167
Format:  Kindle
Publisher:  Forever Yours
Rating:  4 Stars

Kat has always been a good girl. She studies hard and never stays out too late. But when sitting in a pub on her birthday, she realizes she's a nineteen-year-old virgin who's never really lived. And she wants tonight to be the night that changes.

Then she sees him walk in. He's tall, dark, handsome, and straight out of her deepest fantasies. His voice makes her knees feel weak, and when he smiles, she imagines him doing wicked things to her in bed. From the look in his eyes, she knows he's imagining it too. So when he asks if he can walk her home, she hears herself whisper yes . . .

My Thoughts
The flirty and vivacious vixen that manages to captivate Tristan Kingsley with one scorching kiss, in a crowed pub. Is far removed from the reality of the studious, introverted, innocence of Katherine Roberts. An American transplant in the middle of undergraduate studies at Cambridge. Kat's world has been one shaped by the pain of her mother's abandonment, and the responsibility that she feels toward her father.
Never does it occur to Kat that the kiss shared with her tall, darkly handsome, mystery man could and does have the same earth shattering effect on him that it does on her.

But it does.

And it's a feeling that Tristan is bound and determined to experience again.

This is a very engaging and captivating read.

The reason?

Authoress Lauren Smith's ability to play her characters details very close to the vest. Only showing readers enough to make them want to know more.
Making it quite clear that Tristan wants Kat, but leaving us quite in the dark as to the lengths that he is willing to go to win her.
Until he plays his quite sweet and surprisingly romantic hand.

As for Kat...
There is no doubt whatsoever about the feelings that she has for Tristan. The cards that she holds are the ones that answer the 'all in or fold' question when it comes to whether or not she is willing to risk both her body and her heart.

Though there are a great many sexual promises made to the virginal Kat by one very smitten Tristan. The emphasis of their relationship's foundation is one based in romance.
Tristan is careful to get to know Kat's likes and dislikes, wants, fears, and desires. There by establishing himself as a gentleman that both his lady, and their readers would definitely love to see play to win.

Things really do move quite fast in this read, but due to the depth of their emotional connection. There is certainly no shortage of jaw dropping, as connection leads to spark, and spark leads to explosion by story's end.

Surprisingly, there is but one Joker to be found in this Royal Flush of a story. Tristan's promises of earth shattering sex. While the quality is definitely there...the quantity?
Not so much.
In the interest of not being a spoiler sport. I think Oliver said best. "Please sir, can I have some more?"

This is a very romantic versus sexy read. As the first book in a series, there is more than enough room for the afore mentioned more in the following book.

Author's Note:  This is the first book in a continuous series.  As such, it and all subsequent works are to be read in the order in which they appear within the series.

About Lauren

Born and raised in Tulsa, Lauren Smith spent the first twenty-two years of her life in Oklahoma, bridging the worlds between urban girl and cowgirl. After high school she attended Oklahoma State University where she earned Bachelor of Art degrees in history and political science. Drawn to paintings in museums and obsessed with antiques, she has satisfied her fascination with history by writing and exploring exotic, ancient lands.

Over the years, Lauren’s studies have opened doors throughout the world. From spending two summers at Cambridge to attending classes at such divergent places as Ireland and Chengdu, China, she has discovered fascinating opportunities for enrichment wherever she goes.

After completing college, Lauren moved to Michigan to attend law school at the University of Detroit-Mercy and University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. Armed with two Juris Doctorate degrees from both countries, she returned to Tulsa and became an intellectual property attorney.

Since third grade when her English teacher proposed that all students should craft a story for a young writers’ conference, Lauren has been hooked on writing. Her first self-illustrated manuscript described the mysterious disappearance of rare brown bats that were being captured by scientists bent on using them as carriers for an incurable disease. The immense sense of joy in sharing that story with others, and discussing plots and characters, made it clear to Lauren that writing was her true passion.

EXCERPT FROM DIABLO SPRINGS BY ERIN QUINN

Reilly rubbed the back of his neck, looking anywhere but at her face. An awkward pause filled in the shadowed spaces between them. He figured the best thing he could do was leave it at that. He caught his lower lip between his teeth and glanced up at her from beneath his lashes, unable to make his feet move away. There was so much he wanted—needed—to say, but there were no words that could make up for the disillusionment and pain that stood between them.
He followed her all the way to a door at the end of the hall where she stopped. The horse-dog waited at her feet, watching him with a steady, menacing look.
“Gracie.” He reached out as he said her name, but the dog advanced with lightning speed and a low growl. Reilly took a hasty step back.
“Juliet,” Gracie reprimanded in a harsh whisper. “No. Friend. Friend.”
She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Reilly’s middle in a meaningless hug meant to convince the dog that the hostility it felt was false. The warmth of her body came through the light embrace and on their own, his arms went around her, pulling her closer. Her hair smelled of coconut, her skin of something sweet and seductive, the scent of Gracie. He’d chased that scent since the last time he’d held her.
The tension in her body seemed to travel like a current to his. He turned his face into the crook of her shoulder and held her tight for just a moment more, just as long as she would let him.
When she pulled back, a mixture of hurt, anger, and mystified hunger lurked in her pretty eyes. She stepped away and opened the door before he could see more. A blast of icy air rushed out at them. Not just cool, but subzero. It snapped him out of his daze.
“Jesus,” he said. “You’ll be frozen before the sun comes up. Maybe she had the air set so high downstairs because all the cold stops here.”
“Maybe,” she agreed, crossing into the room that must have been her grandmother’s like a stranger who’d taken a wrong turn. Slowly, she turned in place, her gaze brushing over the surface of a heavy wood dresser that looked older than the Diablo itself. An antique grooming set was laid out on dainty doily. Pretty little boxes lined the edge by the mirror, oddly shaped and metal. Gracie met her own eyes in her reflection and the desolation he saw would’ve broken his heart if he still had one. Her relationship with her grandmother had always been troubled.
The horse-dog grr’d as Reilly crossed the threshold, but didn’t try to eat him so he started looking along the floorboards for the vents—no easy feat when Gracie’s grandmother had the room packed with heavy furniture.
“This bedroom set belonged to her great-grandmother, I think.”
“It’s probably yours now,” he said softly.
Gracie swayed and reached for the bedpost. Slowly she sank to the edge of the bed, watching him as he continued his search for air vents. He could almost see his breath now.
“She never even met Analise,” Gracie said. “I sent her an announcement when she was born. I sent her Christmas cards, every year with pictures. She never responded.”
Crouched down by the roll top desk, Reilly paused and looked back. “Why?”
“Not a clue.”
They stared at one another from across the room, and he was pretty sure they were both thinking of the mysterious twists and turns of life. From her expression, she didn’t like thinking about it anymore than he did.
He couldn’t see behind the desk, so he stood and pulled it out from the wall.
“I saw her tonight,” Gracie said.
The tone of voice, the reluctance of her words made Reilly pause. He had no doubt who she meant. “At the springs?” he asked, thinking Gracie must have stopped there before coming to the house. Yet he remembered how she’d burst through the door, frantic to see her daughter. Their daughter.
“In my kitchen.” A quiet laugh. “The dogs were all freaked out, barking, and the telephone rang—Eddie, calling to tell me what had happened. Before I answered, Grandma Beck was just there, sitting in the kitchen, holding an old ledger.”
He turned and leaned against the desk. “Same thing happened with Matt. In my car,” he said. “I looked over and Matt was riding shotgun.”
He was breathing heavy, but the air felt thin, icy. Like they were atop a frozen mountain.
“How long was he there?” she asked.
“A couple seconds.”
Her gaze traveled up to his shorn head and lingered. Like she knew that he’d gone home after that and stared into the mirror until his reflection blurred, wondering if he’d finally cracked. He’d started with scissors, whacking off his brown hair like it was somehow to blame. When that hadn’t solved anything, he’d gone for the razor.
Feeling way too exposed, he turned and looked at the floor again.
“I don’t see the vent,” he said, his voice pitched low. Husky.
Despite the instinct urging him to walk away, he glanced up and met her eyes. Gracie lifted a shoulder, her gaze never leaving his.
“I can figure it out tomorrow.”
I not we. Because Gracie had been figuring things out on her own for a long time.
He came to stand in front of her. She had to tilt her head back to see his face. The position was intimate in itself—Gracie sitting on the bed, him standing before her. The urge to cup her face, to hold it while he bent and kissed her . . . it was almost too much to resist.
“Why are you here, Reilly?” she asked. Now her voice was husky, too.
He hesitated, wanting to give her the answer she desired. He might have, too, if he’d been sure what that was.
“It was time,” he said finally.
She frowned and he knew she was looking for the hidden meaning. Even he wasn’t sure about that.
He couldn’t help himself. He brushed the pad of his thumb over the puckered skin between her brows and then, because he couldn’t help that, either, he smoothed a lock of hair behind her ear, his fingers softly skimming the silk of her cheek. Her eyes widened and for a moment, he was lost in the swirling grays and blues, knowing that if she looked hard enough, deep enough she’d see right to raw and wounded center of him. This was an impossible situation and if he didn’t do something quick, he’d be in too deep to ever get out.
She shook her head and pulled back. Disappointment and relief waged a war inside of him. Reluctantly, he dropped his hand.
“You should leave,” she said.
Reilly agreed one-hundred-and-one percent. Leave. Go. Get as far away as fast as he could.
“You sure?”
“You had your chance to be a stand-up guy with me, Reilly. You didn’t take it. I’ve moved on. I’ve built a good life for me and my daughter. We don’t need you.”
“Your daughter dragged you all the way back here, looking for her daddy, Gracie. You haven’t moved on quite far enough.”
She stared at him, wounded. If she’d been cruel, he’d been pitiless. But he was right. The past was over, but tonight their daughter had decided to bring history into the present, whether they liked it or not.
He’d had every reason to walk away all those years ago. Reasons that had ripped out his heart and made him the man he was now. He’d betrayed his brother—the one person who’d always been there for him—so he could come back to her, only to find she hadn’t waited.
He shouldn’t be asking for a chance to make things right. Gracie should.
He laughed, low and without humor. She scowled at him.
“Good night, Gracie.”

There Are Definite Thrills In The Waters Surrounding "Love, Lattes, and Mutants

Title:  Love, Lattes, And Danger
(Mutants #2)
Author:  Sandra Cox
Length:  182 pages
Format:  Kindle
Publisher:  Kensington
Rating:  5 Stars

It’s a dirty job, but some mutant’s got to do it…

Joel Eisler is a mutant with special talents. He can detect an oil leak in the ocean simply by tasting the water. Because of this unique ability, he’s been purchased by a large oil company, along with his dolph sister, Amy. The upside of spending his days and nights in the ocean is that it gives him the opportunity to save the lives of his brother dolphins. The downsides are life as a closely monitored slave—and that he can’t be with Piper, the dolph-girl he loves…

To make matters worse, Joel discovers the lab he grew up in has extracted his sperm and Piper’s egg and created a baby, and his handler, Craven, is plotting to kidnap Amy for more experiments. Now Joel must rescue the infant, bring her to Piper, and find a way to save Amy. And if that’s not enough of a challenge, he needs to convince Piper she belongs with him instead of her all-too-human boyfriend—if Craven doesn’t get to them first…

My Thoughts
This second offering in the Mutants series has readers traversing much deeper waters on all fronts than the decidedly shallow swells on offer from its predecessor.

This story follows Joel and Amy.  Two of the fellow "dolphs" that were introduced in Love, Lattes, and Mutants.  Having been raised in the lab, these two, unlike Piper, have no misgivings about who they are and what they have been created to do.

In fact, Joel manages to find a measure of happiness in the time that he spends on the world's waters, using his mutant ability to smell oil leaks that if left unchecked, have the potential to devastate everything they touch.

But when a trip back to the lab where he and the others were created puts him face to face with a daughter created with stolen genetic material from him and Piper.  He knows that he, Amy, and little Angel, have to be free at any cost.

But wanting freedom and achieving it, prove to be seahorses of two different colors.  Especially when our heroes are up against a twisted scientist, a multinational corporation, and a mutant hating mad man.
All of whom with to much to lose to see them go free.

This book is far more New Adult than its Young Adult companion. While one is heart sick over the plights of Joel and Amy; the potential exploitation of the innocent Angel, ups the emotional ante to astronomical heights.
When you add the components of a race against time, and all of the obstacles standing between Joel, Amy, and freedom.
This book is no less than one hell of a fin-tastic thrill ride.

As if the waters surrounding Joel and Amy aren't choppy enough. There is also the added complication that hints of a possible love triangle staring none other than Joel, Piper...and Tyler.

This is a very fast paced read that catapults readers through plot twists, scenes, and emotions at the speed of light.
This reviewer is more than happy to recommend Love, Lattes, and Danger to anyone brave enough to dive into its whirlpool of love, action, suspense, and heart.

Reviewer's Note:  This book is part of a sequential series which must be read in order.

Let The Sons Of Odin Take "Possession" Of Your Heart

Title:  Possession
(The Sons Of Odin #2)
Author:  Violetta Rand
Format:  eARC
Length:  TBD
Date Of Publication:  April 12, 2016
Publisher:  Random House/Loveswept
Rating:  5 Stars

The Sons of Odin motorcycle club is back! Violetta Rand follows up Persuasion (“A seriously sexy thrill ride!”—Stacey Kennedy) with a sizzling short novel that takes passion to the brink of chaos . . . and beyond.

Ambitious young attorney Tina Bethel doesn’t have time for commitment, but she wouldn’t pass up some hot, no-strings sex with the right guy—like Sons of Odin officer Vincent Ramos. Six feet, five inches of solid muscle and biker masculinity, he revs Tina up like no man ever has. The trouble is, every time they get physical, Tina’s cravings are never quenched—because Vincent always pumps the brakes before the point of no return.

With her sexy body packaged in a short skirt, Tina’s enough to drive any man crazy. Vincent isn’t sure how he’s resisted her shameless come-ons. He just knows that if he gives in, he won’t be able to stop—and after two failed marriages, he can’t afford any more broken promises. But when a disgruntled client of Tina’s starts stalking her, Vincent has to make up his mind about his true feelings—fast. Because if he’s willing to put his body in the line of fire, he should be able to risk his heart in the name of love.

My Thoughts
Authoress Violetta Rand just keeps the romantic hits coming with Possession.  The sizzling second offering in the Sons of Odin series.
This time around we are introduced to up and coming defense attorney, Valentina Bethel, and Sons Of Odin Treasurer, Vincent Ramos.

To say that these two are attracted to each other is without a doubt, the biggest understatement of the year.  But succumbing to the pull of passion can be more than a little difficult when anything more than a kiss sends Vincent running for the hills.

But when a client begins to stalk Valentina, forcing her to head for Vincent and all the...ahem...safety...that only he can offer.

Can Valentina make a case strong enough to sway Vincent's gun shy heart?
Or will her motion for discovery of Vincent's briefs be denied?

This is a book that draws the reader in with the promise of what could be.
By taking the time to establish the validity of Vincent and Valentina's attraction to each other before we are formally introduced to the characters themselves. Authoress Rand gives her audience a readymade stake in the success or failure of the unfolding relationship.

The fact that Vincent proves to be not only a knight on shining motorcycle to Valentina's 21st century damsel, but a gentleman to  fault!
What?
Vincent makes one's heart melt.  He is never one to try to tame or conquer Valentina.  Choosing instead to support and protect her quietly.

For her part, Valentina uses her go getter drive to  do just that.
Showing her heartbroken hero just how worthy he is of the love that she is so willing to give.

Wait!  Hold the phone!
Did you think this book was all about the romance?
Not by a long shot.
There is also a good old fashioned beat down going on when a fellow Son Of Odin goes rogue to rescue a lady from the clutches of an abusive rival club member.
And...
Wait for it...
The oh is fabulous way that Vincent deals with Valentina's stalker.

V+V=Very good reading!

Reviewer Note:  This is the second offering in a companion series.  These novels may be read both individually, or as part of their intended collection.

Greta And The Lost Army + Giveaway

Greta and the Lost Army (Mylena Chronicles #3) by Chloe Jacobs
Published on February 1st, 2016
Published by Entangled Teen
Genre: YA paranormal/Fantasy

After spending the last four years trapped in a place of monsters, demons, and magick, the last thing the fierce teenage bounty hunter Greta expected was to ever be back on Earth. But a rare opportunity gives her and the Goblin King Isaac the opportunity to do just that. Now she’s home. With a boy in tow. And her parents have lots of questions.
Although Greta finally has her heart’s deepest wish—to see her family again—every step she takes to reconnect with them drives her further away from Isaac. Greta and Isaac planned for her to return to Mylena and become his queen, but she’s not sure if she can go back to that harsh world, though staying on Earth means giving up the boy she loves.
But a powerful enemy refuses to let Greta escape. A demon who will stop at nothing to destroy her and everything she loves. Even if it means following her to Earth and forcing her to face a fate as unavoidable as love itself.

Buy The Book

My Thoughts
Greta And The Lost Army should be retitled All The Reasons That Earth Sucks Compared To Myleana.
The reason
The first 50% (kindle approximation) of this book is spent doing just that.  As Greta and the gang find themselves on the Earth side of yet another portal.
Hearts will break as the pungest of the human Lost Boys are unceremoniously torn from their tribe and reunited with their families.
The more of this that Greta is forced to endure, the more that Greta knows that life on Myleana is her only option.

This is also where things between Isaac and Greta become, shall we say, irreversible.
And the search for the return portal begins.
Thankfully!

Things in Myleana are worse than ever, complete with demon possessed fae and a gnome king bent on destruction.

The action and cohesion of the last half of this tale, more than makes up for the slow emotionality of the first half.
Seeing Issac and Greta gather their troops while reigning together as a true king and queen.
Awesome!

This is a great end to an excellent series!

Her husband and son are the two best people in the entire world, but they also make her wish she’d at least gotten a female cat. No such luck. And although the day job keeps her busy, she carves out as much time as possible to write. Bringing new characters to life and finding out what makes them tick and how badly she can make them suffer is one of her greatest pleasures, almost better than chocolate and fuzzy pink bunny slippers.

Read below for an excerpt from Greta and the Lost Army:
The streetlamps cast soft cones of light on the sidewalks all the way through the neighborhood. Greta pointed things out as she remembered them. “That’s where my friend Danielle used to live. I guess she probably still lives there.” “Are you looking forward to seeing her again?” She nodded. “And if I remember correctly, she’s more hyper than a Mylean berserker—only less ripping and tearing, and more frenzied hugging and constant talking.” The rumble of his amused chuckle made her grin. He squeezed her hand. She looked up at him, and it hit her. “You know, this is kind of like a date,” she said, tingles of awareness dancing up her spine. His smile was crooked, and his eyes warm as he laid his arm across her shoulders, making her feel like he would rather be here with her right now than anywhere else. It probably wasn’t true. They were both too worried about Mylena for it to ever leave their minds completely, but maybe one day it would be true. “What would be the purpose of a date?” There was such a thing as courtship in Mylena, but she and Isaac had pretty much bypassed anything resembling normal…in both worlds. What if she was wrong and the portal didn’t open again? What if they stayed here? There could be more nights just like this, and eventually maybe they would get a place of their own and… “You know, so a couple can get to know one another and decide if they like each other.” “But we already know we like each other.” When they were alone like this and his voice softened because he trusted her enough to let down his guard, it did crazy things to her. Like popping candy hitting her bloodstream. “Even more important, we know that we fit together. In battle together, or planning for Mylena’s future, even while arguing…and definitely when I kiss you…nobody fits me like you do.”

Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy

Once upon a dark time…
Greta the human bounty hunter never quite fit into the shadowed, icy world of Mylena. Yet she’s managed to defeat the demon Agramon and win the love of the darkly intense Goblin King, Isaac. Now Isaac wants her to rule by his side—a human queen. And the very announcement is enough to incite rebellion…
To make matters worse, defeating Agramon left Greta tainted with a dark magick. Its unclean power threatens to destroy her and everything she loves. With the Goblin King’s life and the very peace of Mylena at stake, Greta must find a cure and fast.
Her only hope lies with the strange, elusive faeries in the Glass Kingdom…if she can get there before the evil within her destroys everything.

My Thoughts
Greta And The Glass Kingdom puts readers right back into the thick of the unrest in Myleana.  Only this time, Greta has a front row seat for all of the drama unfolding inside The Goblin King's castle?

How can she not?

She is slated to become his queen after all!

That is if his subjects can stop themselves killing her or each other before the coronation.

And...
If she can find a way to control the powerful, dark magic coursing through her.  Threatening to consume her very soul at the slightest lapse in her control.  Pushing Issac toward his Goblin nature with each passing day.

Their only hope?

The elusive court of the fae. In the long closed Glass Kingdom.

Or are their promises of aid and friendship just another lie?
Are the risks worth the possible gains?
Will Greta, Issac, and Myleana survive?

This book is stunning!  Issac and Greta are better than ever! The threats to both their lives and the kingdom are growing more numerous by the day, and there are still humans left to find and save.

The world of Greta And The Glass Kingdom is so easy to get lost in.
The characters, creatures, plot twists, betrayals, and unexpected alliances.  Coupled with the romance breakneck pace and ever present action, takes this series and all who read it to a new level of fantasy.

Every aspect of this story is perfect.  This is the type of story that creates readers.  The kind of read that requires snacks, a favorite reading spot, scheduled trips to the bathroom and a serious DO NOT DISTURB SIGN!
