“Let me have her.” I held my hands in the direction of Colin, who’d been pacing with Charlotte in his arms. She was the only happy person in the room and had entertained herself for the past ten minutes by chewing on her fist. He deposited her into my arms and resumed pacing. She grabbed at my chunky silver necklace and lunged for my curls. I knew she wanted to play peek-a-boo in my hair because lately that was her favorite entertainment. “No, babykins. Let’s leave Mommy’s hair alone for tonight.” I swept my curls back with my free hand, and she giggled into my chest. My hair had grown even longer in Caleb’s absence, since I hadn’t had the desire to do anything with it. But my hair didn’t matter, Charlotte’s slobbery little mouth didn’t matter, nothing mattered. We were about to be a family—for the first time. A surge went through me. I was giddy. Manic, even, at the thought of Caleb’s return. I blew a fart noise on Charlotte’s cheek and she laughed more. Bouncing Charlotte on my hip, we turned again to the window, and she reached her chubby hand to the glass, as if trying to touch the night. I’d dressed her in a frothy, hot pink dress with a tulle skirt. She looked unbearably adorable, and it would be impossible for Caleb not to recognize his own child with big blue eyes so identical to his. Colin’s phone buzzed. “It’s him.” He inhaled sharply, then answered and grinned. “Hey. Yeah, we’re all here. Okay.” He hung up. “Caleb and Dad and Mom are in the lobby.” Laura gave a little muffled cry and hugged Sarah, who stared hard at me over Laura’s shoulder. “I’m fine,” I mouthed to her, not feeling fine at all. I kissed Charlotte’s cheek. “Daddy’s home,” I whispered, trying not to shake too much. Charlotte seemed unusually heavy. After a few seconds, a nervous, barking laugh escaped my lips. “How long does it take for the elevator to crawl up here?” No one responded. Then, the ding of the elevator bell. The sliding open of the doors. And my husband walked in.

InkSlinger PR Presents: Disengaged

Today we have the blog tour for Jamie Magee’s Disengaged. Check out this new dark contemporary romance and grab your copy today. Disengaged BT Banner

Dis5

About Disengaged:  Dark Romance Novel, sensitive topics with religious undertones (hope in the face of hell).   Finding herself stranded in a new city, eighteen-year-old Ember Bloom thought she’d reached her all time low. She was wrong. A mindless walk to a dead-end job landed her in the path of her gambling fathers’ enemies. Her only defense was a stranger, Slayton Winslow, a known enforcer and fighter—rumored to be Odin’s prince, underground royalty.   On sight, Slayton stole her breath and rushed her heart. His enigmatic attraction to her and how stoically he shielded her only churned Ember’s attraction to the bad boy who had given her safe haven in a real life hell. The draw to him gave her a reason to fight, to awaken. She knew every second could be their last in the city seeded with treacherous deceit and life threatening power plays.

My Thoughts

Ember Bloom finds herself between a rock and a very corporeal 'hard place' in Jamie Magee's Disengaged.  That rock being her degenerate father's astronomical gambling debts and 'drug world' ties.
The hard place...
Slayton Winslow...a person and story element that we will get back to later.

But for now we must discuss Ember and the insta-plot surrounding her.
This book goes from zero to everything within the first ten pages.  There is no build, there is a scant allusion to the quasi-rebellious nature that our very naive, but not quite virginal ingenue believes leads her into the forest full of bigs and bads that she just happens to stumble upon.
With the biggest and baddest of said 'baddies' coming out of his skin to be her 'knight in shining armor'.
Even going so far as to risk life and limb in cage matches to prove his loyalty to her, and use his own money to help back her father's debts to both loan sharks and drug dealers.

Did I mention that this all occurs before they ever manage to have sex?

Whatever it is about Ember that calls to Slayton must have his name, address, telephone number, and bank accounts.  Because one kiss from her has him going from 'don't know, don't show' to 'climb every mountain' mode in 3.2 seconds.
A factor that proves a little hard to swallow; even in the face of this dark and dangerous world.

A world that, while filled with every manner of vice, sin, and illegality that one could possibly fathom.  DOES NOT qualify this read as a dark romance.
Why?
Because while bad things happen around our little ingenue.  Nothing really bad ever manages to happen directly to her. She is always kept either just out of harms way, or a victim of an impossibly mild degree of the horror being suffered by those around her.
Coupled with the 'clean hands' ending plot twist; that makes for the biggest WTF moment ever.

That is not to say that this book is not well written, emotionally gripping, or worth the read.
It most certainly is all of those things.
But it is also a story that should have been allowed to unfold a bit more slowly, and to tell its very dramatic and tell-worthy tale at a more natural and realistic pace.

51jMQB3ruXL._UX250_About Jamie Magee: Jamie Magee has always believed that each of us have a defining gift that sets us apart from the rest of the world, she has always envied those who have known from their first breath what their gift was. Not knowing hers, she began a career in the fast paced world of business. Raising a young family, and competing to rise higher in that field would drive some to the point of insanity, but she always found a moment of escape in a passing daydream. Her imagination would take her to places she'd never been, introduce her to people she's never known. Insight, her debuting novel, is a result of that powerful imagination. Today, she is grateful that not knowing what defined her, led her on a path of discovery that would always be a part of her.

Pub. Date: August 30, 2016

Synopsis:

When her car breaks down off the side of a lonely highway far from her sunny Miami home, tattoo artist Lia never expected her very own white knight to ride up on the back of a barely street-legal motorcycle...and she never expected to fall for her dark savior. After a string of failed relationships and a bruised heart Lia is not looking for forever, and the hot mechanic, with his sexy scruff and shaggy hair, is simply impossible to resist. He's the perfect candidate for a mind-blowingly-perfect, no-strings-attached one-night stand.

A monster who almost destroyed her. Being with Lia is an unexpected gift, one he doesn't feel he deserves, and their one night together has him wanting more than he should. When he surprises her at her tattoo studio, Second Circle Tattoos, in Miami, he's in for a shock—and a fist to the face—when his past and present collide.

“What is this?” she asked, running her hand over the elongated hood.
“A 1958 Ford Thunderbird. It was a shell when I bought it. Was found in an unused barn with a bunch of other old classics.”
The wheels were black with white faces, and the soft top was a creamy white. Reflections from the chrome cast light onto the white walls.
“I love it,” she said, excited to sit inside.
“Hood up or down?” Kenny asked, slipping her cases into the trunk.
“Oh, most definitely down,” Lia said. Screw the victory rolls, she could always put her hair into a high ponytail and add the red ribbon she had in her purse if her scarf failed. She reached into her bag to find it and tied it around her head.
“I like this,” Kenny said, fingering the knot under her chin gently. The way his eyes crinkled at the corners made her feel all kinds of gooey inside. Perhaps it was a good thing they lived a long drive away from each other. His very presence made it difficult to remember why she was taking some time off from men. But a little harmless flirtation was adding to the adventure of a few days off work. There couldn’t be any harm in that.
Once inside the car, Kenny took her hotel details and plugged them into his phone. “There are few downsides to the classics, but lack of sat-nav has to be one,” he said, turning the radio on. “Ready?”
“I feel like Thelma and Louise about to drive over the edge of the cliff,” she said with a laugh.
“Close. That was a 1966 Ford Thunderbird, eight years younger than this baby. Does that make me J.D.?”
“That depends. Are you planning on driving me to a motel, having your wicked way with me on the dresser, then stealing my life savings?”
“I know a motel, don’t know if they have a dresser, but more than willing to do a drive-by to find out.”
Lia laughed. “I was joking.”
“I wasn’t. Say the word, Red.”
He revved the engine several times, the low growl sexy as all hell, and grinned as he roared out onto the street. Lia watched his hand as he shifted the stick. He caressed the gear stick. The more she stared, the more turned on she became until she had to cross her legs and look out of the window.
Damn him for getting her so hot and bothered. She spared a glance back toward him, just as he turned to face her. And he winked. Because he knew.
And that just turned her on even more.

My Thoughts
Well, say hello to a little story about a kickass tattoo artist, and her equally righteous engineer/mechanic hottie.
Relax.
There will be introductions in a minute.
But first, congratulations are in order for authoress, Scarlett Cole.
The Darkest Link, book #4 in her Second Circle Tattoos series; has everything that Contemporary Romance readers yearn for.
And...
A lotta something extra.

While it is more than true that Reid Kennedy is a man running from his past.  It is also true that he has more than met his future.  When an offer of roadside assistance brings him within stroking distance of two bodies that he just can't seem to resist.
The first being that of a classic 1958 Plymouth Fury.
The second being that of its owner; one pinup-esque, Miss Julianna "Lia" Carlisle.

As one might expect, it doesn't take long for these two very alpha personalities to gel.  Or melt into each other faster than an abandoned ice cream can disappear into the black top at Disney World.
But just as quickly, drama comes a knocking for the two.

For Lia, it take the form of her domineering and power hungry father.  Who will stop at nothing to present the perfect facade in his bid for governor of Florida.
For Reid, the past comes to bite him when he is forced to face the mistakes of his past.  When he finds out that the sister whose life he thought he helped destroy, is not only alive and well.  But is also the best friend of his new babe.

Though engines in this book rev hot and fast, the ride proves scenic, full of twists and dips, and as smooth as butter.

With a powerhouse of a leading lady taking the reigns as only Lia can.  There is only room for a man who is equally as dynamic.  Which is exactly what we get in the wounded, but not brooding Reid.  The kid gloves with which he handles both his lady, and her car, are enough to send any reader's heart into overdrive.
When the light of their budding supernova of a relationship is than set in opposition to the forces threatening to destroy both Lia and Reid in their personal relationships.  Plus the addition of a surprise plot that could spell death for one of them, and this is a read to be read...for sure!

Are you ready for drama, dream lovers, devious daddies, delicious dolls, and undying devotion?
Look no further than The Darkest Link!
