YOU CAN BE A VII. IF YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed …and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
Have you ever wanted to be someone else...or just a better you?
For Kitty Doe, a III in a world where your number is your life; the chance to be someone else and live another life is just what she is offered.  for a price.
This is a book full of so many twists and turns that one is never really sure who to trust or where to place one's loyalties.
While it is true that Kitty enters the gilded cage of power and influence (better known as the Hart family) as little more than the "pawn" to which the book's title alludes; she quickly proves herself to be a smart, resourceful, and wily foil for her manipulative and treacherous adversaries.
This is a book built on the saying, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."  The problem with that in this case is that for Kitty, the list of friends versus enemies is an ever changing one.  In addition, the factions of both camps live with her.
Wow!
As the story progresses, one begins to wonder not which side is the right or wrong one, but whether it is possible for Kitty and those important to her to make it through the maze of lies and intrgue alive.

Sometimes all you've ever wanted
can never be enough.
What would your next move be
if you  were a
PAWN?

Welcome To The Good Old Boy's Club That Is "Prophecy"

Prophecy (The Dragon King Chronicles, #1) Title:  Prophecy
(The Dragon King Chronicles #1)
Author:  Ellen Oh
Format:  Ebook
Length:  312 pages

Rating:  3 Stars

The greatest warrior in all of the Seven Kingdoms... is a girl with yellow eyes.

Kira’s the only female in the king’s army, and the prince’s bodyguard. She’s a demon slayer and an outcast, hated by nearly everyone in her home city of Hansong. And, she’s their only hope...

Murdered kings and discovered traitors point to a demon invasion, sending Kira on the run with the young prince. He may be the savior predicted in the Dragon King Prophecy, but the missing treasure of myth may be the true key. With only the guidance of the cryptic prophecy, Kira must battle demon soldiers, evil shaman, and the Demon Lord himself to find what was once lost and raise a prince into a king.

Intrigue and mystery, ancient lore and action-packed fantasy come together in this heart-stopping first book in a trilogy.

My Thoughts
This book is one that puts me at crossed purposes as a reviewer.   The reason for this being that while the story is very well written; the character interplay and overall tone of the story was enough to set my teeth on edge.
Kira, the downtrodden, under appreciated, misunderstood, ostracized, savior of the world...who also happens to be a girl!
That's right!
She is a powerful woman in a time and tradition where female parts are not allowed.
The thing that makes her plight so infuriating is the fact that the men that she must answer to are so mind-blowingly ignorant to the fact that she is the only thing standing between them and total annihilation.
It is not until the people have lost almost everything, kingdoms have fallen, and demons are literally at the door, that she finally gets the respect she deserves.
Sort of...
While I understand that this book is written to reflect Korean tradition and folklore; the constant negation of Kira's worth and the importance of her role as guardian to both Prince Taejo and the human realm at large was a serious sore spot.

"The Color of Love" Is Annoyingly Black and White

The Color of Love Title:  The Color of Love
Author:  Sandra Kitt
Format:  ERC
Length:  398 pages
Publisher:  Open Road Media
Rating:  3 Stars

Acclaimed for her moving depictions of interracial love, bestselling author Sandra Kitt delivers a passionate and provocative tale of modern romance

An artist trapped in an unfulfilling relationship, Leah Downey wants more out of life. But she plays it safe, never venturing too far from her comfort zone . . . not since the night she was mugged at knifepoint.

Beginning a relationship with a perfect stranger is completely out of character for Leah. But something about Jason Horn strikes a chord deep within her. They couldn’t be more different. Jason is white, a streetwise New York cop haunted by his own demons. He’s stunned by his instant attraction to this vibrant black woman who arouses both desire and his fiercest protective instincts.

 My Thoughts
Leah Downy has been through a lot in her life.  Hiding from life in a relationship based more in convenience than love; existing in the shadow of her vibrant and opinionated sister Gail, and still suffering the effects of a mugging.
When she meets Jason Horn, she has no idea what to make of the attractive white man with the sad, haggard eyes.
What she does know is, that the more that she tries to ignore him...the harder ignoring him becomes.

The story, characters, and plot are all run-of-the-mill good.  What really hurts this read is the archaic attitude of  "white and black don't mix" that is shoved down readers throats non-stop.
The us versus them theme is so pervasive that it is hard to believe that this book is based anywhere near the year 2013.
It often seems as if the author is writing less to tell a story, and more to make a point.

Leah is a unnecessarily weak character; often allowing herself to be used and abused by all of the "black" people close to her.
These people are then allowed to disparage her "healthy" relationship with Jason.

Jason is a great leading man.  He is in fact too good.  By the time one gets to know him, one doesn't know whether to have him sainted or knighted.
This is a case of a book either trying to hard to prove a point. Or not trying hard enough to tell a story.

"A March Bride" Offers A King's Ransom In Christian Romance

A March Bride (A Year of Weddings) Title:  A March Bride
(A Year of Weddings Novella)
Author:  Rachel Hauk
Format:  ERC
Length:  100+
Publisher:  Zondervan
Rating:  5 Stars

Susanna has found her true prince, and their happily ever after is just around the corner. But when Nate asks her to give up something precious to her, Susanna can’t help but wonder if it’s a sign that their love is not meant to be.
Susanna Truitt (Once Upon A Prince) is three weeks from royalty. She’ll soon marry King Nathaniel II of Brighton Kingdom. But when the government insists she renounce her American citizenship before the wedding, coupled with the lack of involvement by family and friends, her heart begins to doubt whether this marriage is God’s plan for her.
Nathaniel would do anything for his bride-to-be. But he knows his position requires that she give up a lot to be with him. Her life will never be her own — right down to her very identity. When she travels home to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, right before the wedding, Nathaniel fears she won’t return. Gathering his courage, he devises a plan to win his bride all over again, and together they seek out a kingdom to treasure above all.  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
King Nathaniel II of Brighton has his heart set on Susanna Truitt, the small-town American landscaper with flashing eyes and a heartwarming smile.
He would like nothing better than to sweep his Southern Belle love off of her red clay covered feet.
The problem?
The lords making the laws in Nate's kingdom are determined to uphold an ages old mandate declaring that all marriages into the royal family are to be between "royals only".
To make matters worse, if they are allowed to marry Susanna may be forced to renounce her American citizenship.
Susanna must decide if what she has to give up constitutes a fair trade for all that she will receive.
Nathaniel must also decide if his true loyalties lies with home and country or with his heart.

This is a modern day tale of fair maidens and fetching kings.  With both of these young lovers seeking to do what's right in both the eyes of church and state; the choices they face seem untenable.
With the help and advice of those they love and trust, and while "seeking first God's will" for their lives, Susanna, Nate, and their readers really do find the happily ever after they seek...with a dash of Christian magic...of course!
A March Bride is one of a series of novellas entitled A Year of Weddings.  It may be read as a stand alone or as part of this wonderful collection.

Love's Unending Promise Delivers In "A February Bride"

The heroine struggles to break destructive cycles of the past. Can this bride shuck expectation and discover who SHE is as a bride and in the Bride of Christ? And if she finally walks down the aisle, what dress will she be wearing? Readers will enjoy this novel of redemption centered on a winter wedding.  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
With wedding bells ringing in the distance and a groom waiting at the alter, the last thing on Allie's mind is "getting hitched."
What is she thinking about?
Mistakes...
Mistakes of her family's past.
Mistakes made by every woman who has ever worn the wedding dress that she is now donning.
Mistakes she feels doomed to repeat.
Mistakes that make her run.

A February Bride is the story of Allie.  A woman who feels that she is sure to repeat the mistakes of marriages of convenience and serial marriage which plague  her family tree. Unable to forgive herself for abandoning Marcus, the love of her life at the alter.  Allie is reluctant to except an invitation from his sister and her best friend, Hannah, to her wedding shower.
This is a story of two hearts destined to be together but kept apart because of the self imposed bondage of fear.
Extolling the virtues of unconditional love and forgiveness, A February Bride provides a wonderful modern day example of  "old things becoming new" when seen through eyes unblinded by condemnation and judgment and ears closed to the ghosting voices of the past.

A February Bride is a wonderful contemporary romance with a Christian spin.  At 112 pages, this spirit lifting novella offers both a balm to the harried soul and food for thought.  Filled with relatable characters and real life situations; this is a book that will appeal to both young and old readers alike.

A February Bride is the second novella in the A Year of Weddings series.  This can be read as a stand alone, but getting the complete series is advised.

December 21, 2012

These are just a few of the days humans prophesied as bringing catastrophic events that would end the world. We predicted nuclear warfare. Drastic climate change. A call from God.

We were wrong.

Cue the gargoyle invasion—laboratory bred mutants designed to slaughter humans. When the government goes AWOL and gargoyles are swarming by the hundreds, it's up to the citizens of the United States to regroup and save themselves.

Meet Cliff Matthews, a teenage boy separated from his entire family with the exception of his younger sister, whom he is desperate to keep alive. Along the quest to save their lives, he encounters people who aren't all that they seem. Everyday's a battle, but if he can't trust his own species, where does that leave his family?

And we can't forget the man who may be willing to sacrifice Cliff's life, if it means world domination.

In terms of doomsday, no one could've seen this coming. The dawn of the apocalypse…

When Stars Die
“Yet, even when stars die, they leave a lasting impact through their light, their diamond brilliance as they scatter their material to form new stars. When people die, they leave the same impact with the footprints they leave on people’s hearts. Even the ones who feel insignificant go out, leaving behind dust that can nourish the world anew.”

According to official records maintained by the state of New York, Matthew Graybosch was born on Long Island in 1978. Urban legends in New York suggest he might be Rosemary’s Baby, the result of top-secret DOD attempts to continue Nazi experiments combining human technology and black magic, or that he sprang fully grown from his father’s forehead with a sledgehammer in one hand and a copy of The C Programming Language in the other — and has given the poor man headaches ever since.

The truth is more prosaic. Matthew Graybosch is a novelist from New York who lives in central Pennsylvania. He is also an avid reader, a long-haired metalhead, and an unrepentant nerd. He is the author of the Starbreaker series, and is working with Curiosity Quills Press to publish the first volume, Without Bloodshed , later this year.
Without Bloodshed
"All who threaten me die."

These words made Morgan Stormrider's reputation as one of the Phoenix Society's deadliest IRD officers. He served with distinction as the Society's avenger, and specialized in hunting down anybody who dared kill an Adversary in the line of duty. After a decade spent living by the sword, Morgan wants to bid a farewell to arms and make a new life with his friends and his music.

Despite his faltering faith, the Phoenix Society has a final mission for Morgan Stormrider. A dictator's public accusations made Morgan a liability to his organization. He must put everything aside, make his way to Boston, and put down Alexander Liebenthal's coup while taking him alive to prove he is not the Society's assassin.

Despite the gravity of his task, Morgan cannot put aside his ex-girlfriend's murder, or efforts to frame him and his closest friends for the crime. He cannot ignore a request from a trusted friend to investigate the theft of designs for a weapon before which even gods stand defenseless. He cannot disregard the corruption implied in the Phoenix Society's willingness to make him a scapegoat should he fail to resolve the crisis in Boston without bloodshed.

However, the words with which he forged his reputation haunt him still.

Who can work in a house that's overrun by contractors and carpenters? Not Madeleine Houser, a successful novelist who gladly accepts the help of her octogenarian friend, Ginny, to arrange for a temporary office in the charming bed and breakfast owned by Ginny's friend, Arthur. Maddie’s never met the innkeeper––but a friendship grows between them as Maddie and Arthur leave messages for each other each day. To Maddie’s alternate delight and chagrin, she seems to be falling for the inn’s owner––a man who's likely many years her senior––and who she’s never even met  -Goodreads

My Thoughts
This sweet novella is a testament to the transcendent power of love and faith.  Madeleine Houser and Arthur Tyler are two souls who, for different reasons are very gun-shy when it comes to matters of the heart.
When Maddie, an author, finds herself with a pesky leak, a power outage, no proof reader, and a looming deadline for the submission of her next book.  The offer of a workspace in the beautiful B & B; owned by the charming, yet  mysterious Arthur Tyler, leads to a friendship of letters between the two...and so much more.

The fluid pacing of this expertly penned novella gives the impression of a much longer work.  Readers are able to get a clear understanding of each character individually, before discovering how they will fit together within the plot's context.
While it is quite clear that both Arthur and Maddie have suffered tragedies of the heart.  It is also quite clear that their strong faith and trust in the will of God gives them the strength they need to trust both themselves and each other.
While it is true that this is a faith based read, there is a refreshing lack of the overt "preachiness" to which such books often resort.

This book is the little reminder that "through faith, love, and time all things are possible".
This wonderful book is the first in a series of stand alone novellas entitled A Year of Weddings.

Are You Brave Enough To Glimpse "The Psychopath Inside"?

The Psychopath Inside: A Neuroscientist's Personal Journey into the Dark Side of the Brain The Psychopath Inside:
A Neuroscientist's Journey Into The Dark Side of the Brain
Author:  Dr James Fallon
Format:  ERC
Length:  256 pages
Publisher:  Current Hardcover
Rating:  4 Stars

“The last scan in the pile was strikingly odd. In fact it looked exactly like the most abnormal of the scans I had just been writing about, suggesting that the poor individual it belonged to was a psychopath—or at least shared an uncomfortable amount of traits with one....When I found out who the scan belonged to, I had to believe there was a mistake....But there had been no mistake. The scan was mine.”

For the first fifty-eight years of his life James Fallon was by all appearances a normal guy. A successful neuroscientist and medical school professor, he’d been raised in a loving, supportive family, married his high school sweetheart, and had three kids and lots of friends.

Then he learned a shocking truth that would not only disrupt his personal and professional life, but would lead him to question the very nature of his own identity.

The Psychopath Inside tells the fascinating story of Fallon’s reaction to the discovery that he has the brain of a psychopath. While researching serial murderers, he uncovered a distinct neurological pattern in their brain scans that helped explain their cold and violent behavior. A few months later he learned that he was descended from a family with a long line of murderers which confirmed that Fallon’s own brain pattern wasn’t a fluke.

As a scientist convinced that humans are shaped by their genetics, Fallon set out to reconcile the truth about his brain with everything he knew about the mind, behavior, and the influence of nature vs. nurture on our personalities. How could he, a successful scientist and a happy family man with no history of violence, be a psychopath? How much did his biology influence his behavior? Was he capable of some of the gruesome atrocities perpetrated by the serial killers he had studied?

Combining his personal experience with scientific analysis, Fallon shares his journey and the discoveries that ultimately led him to that, despite everything science can teach us, humans are even more complex than we can imagine. -Goodreads

My Thoughts

While Dr. Fallon makes very valid and well expressed points for both the "nature" and "nurture" camps of the "origin and propagation of psychopathy" debate.  It is his meticulous research, coupled with a very concise conveyance of his findings to the layperson at large, that keeps one reading.

The parts of the book having to do with his early years and family life are surprisingly routine for the possessor of both a brain and a proven genetic linage seemingly "wired for sound" as it were, in the "psycho at large department".
From all indications, it seems that it takes a Molotov cocktail recipe including such elements as: childhood abuse, environmental stressors, genetic predisposition, and specific patterns of brain area function and/or dysfunction to  create the much publicized brand of psychopathic evil that we all know and fear.

Because Dr. Fallon's knowledge of his field of study is so vast, one can easily forgive his frequent lapses into tedious bouts of name dropping and preening to which it seems men of his accomplished state and renown are often prone.
In short, this book is both a scientific and personal journey...not a destination.  As with any trip, there are bound to be both "must see" sights and seemingly endless miles of road.  If you are a reader fascinated by the mystery of the human mind, or if you just have a few questions about weird Uncle Fred.  The Psychopath Inside may just be your next "must read".

Even in Grundy, Alaska, it's unusual to find a naked guy with a bear trap clamped to his ankle on your porch. But when said guy turns into a wolf, recent southern transplant Mo Wenstein has no difficulty identifying the problem. Her surly neighbor Cooper Graham, who has been openly critical of Mo's ability to adapt to life in Alaska, has trouble of his own. Werewolf trouble.

For Cooper, an Alpha in self-imposed exile from his dysfunctional pack, it's love at first sniff when it comes to Mo. But Cooper has an even more pressing concern on his mind. Several people around Grundy have been the victims of wolf attacks, and since Cooper has no memory of what he gets up to while in werewolf form, he's worried that he might be the violent canine in question.

If a wolf cries wolf, it makes sense to listen, yet Mo is convinced that Cooper is not the culprit. Except if he's not responsible, then who is? And when a werewolf falls head over haunches in love with you, what are you supposed to do anyway? The rules of dating just got a whole lot more complicated. . . .  -Goodreads

My Thoughts

Molly Harper strikes Paranormal Romance gold of the furry variety with her latest offering, the first book of the Naked Werewolf series.
Mo Wenstein is a self assured albeit, quirky heroine whose quick wit, anti-Southern southerness, and loveable snarkiness make her the perfect match for his wolfy-hottness, Cooper Graham.
Cooper offers just the right amount of rugged charm, protectiveness, reluctant romantic, and howlingly sexy animal magnetism to make him the ultimate in fantasy lover material.  Add to that the small town coziness and salt of the earth quirk of Grundy Alaska, and you have a first rate heart fluttering comedic romance like no other.
As if all the previous reasons for loving this book were not enough to send you in a mad dash to the nearest bookstore; there is also mystery.
Yep, you heard right!
The people of Grundy are being attacked and Cooper is convinced that he is the culprit.
See...a great read!
Right?
If you want a book that has enough comedy to make you LOL, enough romance to make you OMG, and enough mystery and plot twists to make you WTF?  This is definitely the book for you.

Generations of werewolves have been secretly residing in a secluded valley a stone’s throw from Grundy, Alaska. So when a snooping Outsider comes to Grundy to investigate rumors of lycanthropic shenanigans in the area, the valley’s pack alpha, Maggie Graham, resolves to chase him away, even if doing so takes a quick bite on the butt.

What a pity that researcher Nick Thatcher turns out to be so drool-worthy, and that his kisses make Maggie want to sit up and beg. Maggie just can’t seem to convince Nick to leave . . . and even worse, she can’t convince herself to stay away from him. Cross-species dating is problem enough for a harried alpha female, but on top of that, a rival group of werewolves is trying to move into the valley. With interpack war threatening, Maggie can’t afford to be distracted.

Combining romance and a career can be tough for anyone; for a werewolf in love with a human, it may be disastrous. . . .-Goodeads

Molly Harper journeys once again into the wilds and weres of the Great White North with The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf.  This time the star of the show is first ever female alpha, and general pain in the butt, Maggie Graham.
A self proclaimed bacholorette, with more than enough to handle with her crash course in pack management.  Maggie is a little less than thrilled to learn that there be a stranger a lurkin' in her woods.  A very yummy smelling stranger; according to her wolven sniffer.  But, an outsider nonetheless.
The rustic romance and howling hi jinx that readers were introduced to in How To Flirt With a Naked Werewolf continues in The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf.  Keeping it in the family, Molly Harper allows readers to get up close and personal with the feisty female fur-ball, and by extension delve further into pack life in the valley.
Who knew that Maggie's ball busting ways and wild child heart could be tamed by the mild mannered, bespectacled, uber brain with Norse-god good looks.
Nothing about Maggie's existence has ever been easy, and watching her attempt to balance her attraction to the good doctor, with her new found duties to the pack; while attempting to keep her hairy heritage a secret, is nothing less than fantasy-tastic romantic fun of the highest order.
Just in case you were wondering.
All of you Cooper and Mo fans will not be disappointed.  The delicious dynamic duo and their pretty little plus one make an appearance or two this time around as well.

How To Run With A Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #3) Title :  How To Run With a Naked Werewolf
(Naked Werewolf #3)
Author:  Molly Harper
Format:  Print
Length:  352 pages

Caleb Graham is a werewolf by nature, a tracker by profession. He uses his “extra gifts” to find people, and not always in the most legal or ethical manner. He doesn’t care what they’ve done, or who wants them found, as long as his considerable fee is paid. He likes his life simple and uncomplicated.

Anna Moder, former physician to Caleb’s pack, happens across Caleb during a particularly violent “negotiation” that has left him bloodied and unconscious. She helps him, despite the fact that he’s cost her a car, so he insists that she stay with him on the road for a while. As they grow closer, Anna looks past the gruff exterior and and the questionable job to thoroughly decent werewolf underneath.

Anna – who is careful to edit her involvement with Caleb’s pack from their conversations – doesn’t talk about why a nice girl wants to live in the middle of frozen nowhere, but she’s obviously on the run from something. When Anna’s past collides with Caleb’s current assignment from one of his sleazier contacts, Caleb finally has to make a choice—protect his job…or his potential mate?  -Goodreads

My Thoughts

The third installment of the Naked Werewolf series, finds readers on the run with ex-valley doctor, Anna Moder.  With a dangerous secret from her past hounding her every step; Anna's chance meeting with the unfortunate end of her car and the beginning of an unlikely friendship/partnership with a certain wolfy rendition of Dawg The Bounty Hunter, spells pure Chick-Lit bliss.
While it is true that the bones of the story told in How To Run With a Naked Werewolf, make for much darker fare than those of its predecessors; the romance, comedic treatment, and nonstop action of this read work together to provide readers with the very relatable, feel-good romance that Molly Harper fans have come to expect.
The the romantic fires are much slower to kindle between our supernatural hunter and his skiddish quarry, but the more time they spend together, catching bad guys and uncovering secrets; the more things between them heat up.
This may be the sweetest story of the three because of the poignancy of Anna's back-story.  Seeing her overcome her past, to open her heart to Caleb Graham, is enough to make one's heart sing.
While Caleb's willingness to do "whatever it takes" to protect and serve his lady love without stripping her of her strength, intelligence, and self sufficiency make him a were that dreams are made of.

Adrianne James

Adrianne James

@Adrianne_James

Growing up, Adrianne couldn't get her hands on enough books to satisfy her need for the make believe. If she finished a novel and didn't have a new one ready and waiting for her, she began to create her own tales of magic and wonder. Now, as an adult, books still make up majority of her free time, and now her tales get written down to be shared with the world.

During the day, Adrianne uses her camera to capture life's stories for clients of all ages and at night, after her two children are tucked in bed; she devotes herself to her written work. Adrianne is living the life she always wanted, surrounded by art and beauty, the written word and a loving family.

As a young adult and new adult author, Adrianne James has plans to bring stories of growing characters, a little romance, and perhaps a little magic and mythology down the line for her readers to enjoy.

This one I couldn't wait to read!  I found out that the cover was made by the author!  So surprised!  Going into this book I wasn't sure what I was going to get.  But, I was surprised not only by the cover! But, by what lay within the pages! It is wonderful, great, knock your socks off interesting! I finished this one in half a day as I couldn't stop reading it! The plot was wonderful and the characters and story were so real.  Vi is such a great character with a love of photography I instantly loved her. Her passion to get real shocking news on film just made her a great main character in this book.  For a stand alone this book would also make a great series! Cant wait to get this in print!

Krystal Wade

Krystal Wade

@KrystalWade

Krystal Wade can be found in the sluglines outside Washington D.C. every morning, Monday through Friday. With coffee in hand, iPod plugged in, and strangers - who sometimes snore, smell, or have incredibly bad gas - sitting next to her, she zones out and thinks of fantastical worlds for you and me to read.

How else can she cope with a fifty mile commute?

Good thing she has her husband and three kids to go home to. They keep her sane.

This was one of the first series that I had gotten in print by the author.  I got to give away an entire set of signed copies.  I was then very happy to receive a signed set for myself. From some giveaway.  So I was over joyed when the author decided to come on our show.  This series is amazing! Its a story of finding your true self and standing up for those in need.  Its also a very nice romance between two people that were worlds apart.  This is a deff must read series!! For those who love fantasy and the old war of Good vs. Evil!

Ahoy. This is my small, oddly-shaped island in the GoodReads archipelago. You're welcome to surf, swim in the lagoon, or stroll along the pier (where they sell prawns and whelks by the cupful). If you'd like to keep things topical—as well as tropical—head down to the beach and sling yourself in a hammock with a good book. One of these, perhaps...

My first novel, ZORGAMAZOO, won the 2011 California Young Reader Medal, the 2010 Silver Birch Award, and the 2009 Children’s Choice Award. If you've had a bit too much sun and crave something darker, try my hardboiled fairy tale, DUST CITY. It was shortlisted for the 2011 Edgar Alan Poe Award and the 2011 Sunburst Award. My newest novel-in-verse, PRINCE PUGGLY OF SPUD AND THE KINGDOM OF SPIFF, is out now from Penguin/Razorbill and THE CREATURE DEPARTMENT emerges from its secret underground lair in November 2013.

I live in London, England, which is also on an island.

The Creature DepartmentA hidden laboratory…

A brilliant invention…

A team of quite unusual creatures…

But can they save the department?

Elliot Von Doppler and his friend Leslie think nothing ever happens in Bickleburgh, except inside the gleaming headquarters of DENKi-3000—the world’s fifth-largest electronics factory.

Beneath the glass towers and glittering skywalks, there's a rambling old mansion from which all the company’s amazing inventions spring forth. And no one except Uncle Archie knows what’s behind the second-to-last door at the end of the hall.

Until Elliot and Leslie are invited to take a glimpse inside.

They find stooped, troll-like creatures with jutting jaws and broken teeth; tiny winged things that sparkle as they fly; and huge, hulking, hairy nonhumans (with horns). It is unlike anything they’ve ever seen!

But when Chuck Brickweather threatens to shut down the DENKi-3000 factory if a new product isn’t presented soon, the creatures know they are in danger. And when Uncle Archie vanishes, it’s up to Elliot, Leslie, and every one of the unusual, er, "employees" to create an invention so astonishing it will save The Creature Department.

Well for this one my daughter was glad to see come in the mail.  I guess she had heard about it from school.  So when she seen it she grabbed it and I didn't see it for three days.  She read it and shared it with her class.  I finally got a hold of it and I was blown away!  From the cover to the creative art work on the pages this story and plot will grab any child's imagination.
