When you gamble at love . . .
When Hugh Deveraux discovers his newly inherited earldom is bankrupt, he sets about rebuilding the family fortune—in the gaming hells of London. But the most daring wager he takes isn’t at cards. A wealthy tradesman makes a tantalizing offer: marry the man’s spinster daughter and Hugh’s debts will be paid and his fortune made. The only catch is that she must never know about their agreement . . .
You risk losing your heart . . .
Heiress Eliza Cross has given up hope of marriage until she meets the impossibly handsome Earl of Hastings, her father’s new business partner. The earl is everything a gentleman should be, and is boldly attentive to her. It doesn’t take long for Eliza to lose her heart and marry him.
But when Eliza discovers that there is more to the man she loves—and to her marriage—her trust is shattered. And it will take all of Hugh’s power to prove that now his words of love are real . . .

He kissed as if he meant to conquer her . . .

Eliza could only stare back. He’d kissed her until her brain melted and her tongue turned to lead. Good heavens, she wished he’d do it again.

“Eliza—”

He stopped and cleared his throat. “Miss Cross, that went further than I planned,” he finally said, his voice very low and still rough with want.

His hands drifted to rest on her hips. He put his mouth next to her ear. “Should I apologize for what happened?”

The tiniest shake of her head.

His lips touched the sensitive skin behind her ear. “May I call on you?”

“Yes,” she whispered.

Eliza gazed up at him, wondering if he could tell from looking at her that she was about to fall headlong in love . . .

My Thoughts
Authoress Caroline Linden does a most delightful service to Historical Romance story-craft.  When in her latest book, she actually allows readers the chance to see life from the vantage point of a titled but impoverished noble.
In the form of one Hugh Deveraux.  Who finds himself between a gold nugget and a hard place.  When he is left destitute after the death of his father.  But then is basically bought and paid for by a wealthy businessman.
To court and marry his daughter.

While it is true that scenarios of this nature abound in this genre.  There are a few things that work here to set this story apart.  And for all intents and purposes, well ahead of the pack.
The first of which.  After the afore mentioned fact that the beleaguered pauper is male.
The fact that he doesn't want to be a party to his benefactor's scheming.
That's right.
Try as you might to vilify Hugh.
He is, not so deep down, a good person.

The second, and most important fact that works in both the story's favor and in Hugh's; is that he actually is hoping that things will work out between them.
Yep...
That's right!
Earls dream of "happily ever after" too!

Sweetening an already overflowing pot of storytelling goodness.
Leading lady, and unsuspecting wooie, Miss Eliza Cross.
She may not be the prettiest flower in the "marriage mart" bouquet.  But she is however, one of the sweetest, smartest, and most endearing.
Which is why, for all her shyness and all of his blundering.  Readers find themselves PRAYING for all that they are worth; that things work out for these two.

This very well written mid-paced book is filled with just enough high-nosed snubbery and other slights to the couple to make their struggle for legitimacy very real for the reader.
There is also the ever present danger of all the behind-the-scenes deal making being found out.  Before the very touching "love making" has a chance to fully mature.

In short.
If you are a reader who believes that sometimes even the prince needs saving.
If you love a good Pretty Woman story.  ( Can you guess who plays Julia Roberts character here?)
And...
You really want a story worth falling in love with.
An Earl Like You is the read for a guy or girl like you!
