About Disengaged:
Dark Romance Novel, sensitive topics with religious undertones (hope in the face of hell).
Finding herself stranded in a new city, eighteen-year-old Ember Bloom thought she’d reached her all time low. She was wrong. A mindless walk to a dead-end job landed her in the path of her gambling fathers’ enemies. Her only defense was a stranger, Slayton Winslow, a known enforcer and fighter—rumored to be Odin’s prince, underground royalty.
On sight, Slayton stole her breath and rushed her heart. His enigmatic attraction to her and how stoically he shielded her only churned Ember’s attraction to the bad boy who had given her safe haven in a real life hell. The draw to him gave her a reason to fight, to awaken. She knew every second could be their last in the city seeded with treacherous deceit and life threatening power plays.
My Thoughts
Ember Bloom finds herself between a rock and a very corporeal 'hard place' in Jamie Magee's Disengaged. That rock being her degenerate father's astronomical gambling debts and 'drug world' ties.
The hard place...
Slayton Winslow...a person and story element that we will get back to later.
But for now we must discuss Ember and the insta-plot surrounding her.
This book goes from zero to everything within the first ten pages. There is no build, there is a scant allusion to the quasi-rebellious nature that our very naive, but not quite virginal ingenue believes leads her into the forest full of bigs and bads that she just happens to stumble upon.
With the biggest and baddest of said 'baddies' coming out of his skin to be her 'knight in shining armor'.
Even going so far as to risk life and limb in cage matches to prove his loyalty to her, and use his own money to help back her father's debts to both loan sharks and drug dealers.
Whatever it is about Ember that calls to Slayton must have his name, address, telephone number, and bank accounts. Because one kiss from her has him going from 'don't know, don't show' to 'climb every mountain' mode in 3.2 seconds.
A factor that proves a little hard to swallow; even in the face of this dark and dangerous world.
A world that, while filled with every manner of vice, sin, and illegality that one could possibly fathom. DOES NOT qualify this read as a dark romance.
Why?
Because while bad things happen around our little ingenue. Nothing really bad ever manages to happen directly to her. She is always kept either just out of harms way, or a victim of an impossibly mild degree of the horror being suffered by those around her.
Coupled with the 'clean hands' ending plot twist; that makes for the biggest WTF moment ever.
That is not to say that this book is not well written, emotionally gripping, or worth the read.
It most certainly is all of those things.
But it is also a story that should have been allowed to unfold a bit more slowly, and to tell its very dramatic and tell-worthy tale at a more natural and realistic pace.
